A fine villa by Robert Wemyss in the Arts and Crafts style

Strathmoyne occupies a prime corner plot in the Upper West End of Helensburgh within the conservation district. This is arguably the most sought after location of the town and is home to works by some of Scotland's most celebrated architects which include MH Baillie Scott, William Leiper, Charles Rennie Mackintosh and Robert Wemyss.

Helensburgh Central Station is on the main Glasgow Queen Street line, with Helensburgh Upper Station on the West Highland line. There is a new direct service from Helensburgh Central to Edinburgh. The town offers a selection of local primary schools, with the reputable Hermitage Academy being the secondary school. Private schooling is catered for by Lomond School which provides facilities for day pupils and boarders alike. Helensburgh offers a wide range of local amenities including good local shopping and numerous civic and leisure facilities. Waitrose has recently opened a supermarket.

The property is well situated for golfers, with easy access to Helensburgh Golf Club, Cardross Golf Club, The Carrick and the world famous Loch Lomond Golf Club. Cameron House Hotel is only a short drive away.

Helensburgh, considered by many as a gateway to the Highlands, combines both town and country living, with Loch Lomond and the Trossachs within easy reach. The Glencoe and Nevis Range ski areas are both within approximately an hour and a half's drive and for water sports enthusiasts the Firth of Clyde provides some of Scotland's most testing sailing waters. Rhu Marina, home to many a fine sailing craft, is about two miles away, as is the historic Royal Northern and Clyde Yacht Club, whose patron is HRH the Princess Royal. Helensburgh Sailing Club has a new clubhouse and offers excellent training facilities for children.

Strathmoyne is Category B listed and an excellent example of the work of Robert Wemyss, a resident of Helensburgh and creator of some of the best examples of the Arts and Crafts movement. Built in 1899 for W Snell Anderson, it is one of the larger villas designed by Wemyss in Helensburgh. It shows the influence of Norman Shaw and echoes the later work of William Leiper in Upper Helensburgh by using a mixture of materials, red sandstone, harling, red-tiling and mock half-timbering. Wemyss added a billiard room, now the drawing room, in 1910.

Strathmoyne is built in red sandstone over two main levels and is defined by its stained glass window which rather unusually is on the front, south facing elevation. The slate roof was replaced in 2008 and over the last few years the property has undergone significant upgrading including new oak flooring throughout the hallway in the dining room and drawing room and a new energy efficient Worcester boiler has been installed. The property is presented in excellent order throughout and offers flexible and spacious family accommodation.

Double storm doors lead into a large porch with walk in store then a door with stained glass panels opens to an L shaped reception hallway.

The reception hallway has a stained glass window above a period fireplace with brass Arts and Crafts detail. Off the reception hallway are a sitting room with oriel window and gas flame effect fire, dining room, study, cloakroom and rear hall.

The dining room has a bay window looking south over the town to the Firth of Clyde, a wooden fireplace with tiled insets, oak flooring and doors to the kitchen and the drawing room. Formerly the billiard room, the drawing room, has a vaulted, beamed ceiling and timber panelling to around picture rail height. It has a gas flame effect fire set into an attractive Arts and Crafts fireplace.

The kitchen is well fitted with wall mounted and counter level units. It has Corian worktops which incorporate the sink and NEFF dishwasher. A range style stove set in a tiled recess with overmantel is included in the sale. There is ample space for a dining table and chairs. Off the kitchen is a lobby off which are a back door, a WC and a large utility room with a sink and plumbing for a washing machine. From the utility room is a boiler room which has a door to outside.

A handsome staircase with beautifully carved newel posts, balustrade and hand rail rises from the hallway to the first floor. The half landing and upper landing are lit by a beautiful south facing stained glass window.

Upstairs are five bedrooms and a family bathroom. The freshly decorated master bedroom stretches the full depth of the house benefitting from a dual aspect, newly fitted wardrobes and recently re-fitted modern en suite shower room. The guest bedroom has an en suite bathroom and there is a family bathroom.

Wine cellar with external access.
Garage accessed from West Lennox Drive via hardwood gates.
Additional garage and workshop to side of house.

A red stone chipped driveway with movement activated lights leads up from West Munro Drive to the front of the house and continues round the side to the garage/workshop. The front gardens have an extensive level lawn and well stocked borders. To the rear the gardens are also extensive with a level lawn area with well stocked flower beds with shrubs and trees, There is a pedestrian gate to Upper Colquhoun Street and also monoblocked vehicle access from West Lennox drive to the garage.

Square Footage: 3,763 sq ft
