Freshwater Bay, Isle of Wight

Property Description

Full description

Tenure: Share of Freehold

Pannells was so named from the parcel of land on which it was built, as of all the Tennyson estate fields had picturesque names. The house was built in the mid 1800's for Tennyson's brother Frederick and continued to be a popular dwelling over the years for many more interesting people. William Thackeray a friend and college chum of Lord Tennyson who was better known for his satirical works, particularly Vanity Fair had long standing connections with the property. Later his daughter, Hester sold her home opposite Dimbola Lodge to purchase Pannells, where she collaborated in a charming memoir entitled 'Thackerys Daughter'. The property was later converted into apartments in the 1950's. Flat 1, spans the entire ground floor of the building and offers bright spacious accomodation throughout. The current owners have sympathetically modernised the apartment, carefully manageing to keep the wonderful wooden panelling with lead windows in the entrance porch, the deep skirting boards, dado rails, original doors and other character features. The sitting room and master bedroom have wonderful sea views across the garden and neighbouring fields to the bay. There is a large dining room which leads on to the country style kitchen, a further two double bedrooms and two modern bathrooms.

Just along the lane is 'Dimbola Lodge', the photographic museum/gallery and within a few hundred yards there is a useful general store/post office together with the much photographed 'St Agnes' thatched church and the Farringford, the former home to Lord Tennyson. Freshwater village centre with its range of shops, services and amenities is within a mile and the harbour town of Yarmouth, with its mainland ferry terminal is within a ten minute drive, making this property an excellent and affordable investment opportunity to purchase as a permanent or second home/holiday retreat.
