Living Here... - OK people, get this – someone is building a boat at Blackhorse Workshop. No, it isn’t a scene out of Evan Almighty – someone really is building a boat there. Only in Walthamstow could something as mad, crazy and downright fantastic as that happen. It makes us want to hot foot it down there, grab a cup of liquid caffeine from Wood St Coffee whilst we’re at it and see what other amazing things are happening in what’s becoming the arts hub of E17. Time Out wrote about “14 brilliant things to do on Blackhorse Lane”, but we think there are dozens more, just waiting for us (you) to find them. In This Area - By Walthamstow Diary - Blackhorse Road station sits at the junction of Blackhorse Road and Blackhorse Lane. The name is actually a mispronunciation of Black House, a grand old house that once stood near St James Street. Blackhorse Road runs through the heart land of the old Warner estate. If the road was an artery, then its veins would be the quiet tree lined streets of red brick half house flats that lead off many of its junctions. Have a wander down Edward Road and marvel at number 108. This beautiful tiled building is now flats, but was once part of Truman's Brewery. It is simply glorious. Stoneydown Park is not only a great park with a kids’ playground, it is also home to a music festival. Every summer the Stoneydown Park festival fills the air with good music from local musicians, and fills our stomachs with great food and ice cold beer. It’s completely free and personally speaking, one of my favourite events of the year. Just behind the park is Bonner’s Fish Bar which, according to some, is the best chip shop in Walthamstow. Quiet streets, good transport links, free music, and the best chippy - what more could you want?
