Description

Description
Not seen in the open market for over 50 years, The Mill House and its associated properties are now being offered for sale as a whole. It is very difficult to describe this particular property as it simply enchants everyone who visits. The river Mimram, which is a rare chalk stream, flows through and brings with it such a wealth of nature, like a natural highway, bringing ducks, swans, wagtails, kingfishers, mallards, egrets, herons, waders, trout, crayfish and many more. Foxes and deer come in the night time and use the wooden bridges to get across. The garden is an oasis among the fields and away from the towns and busy urban life, it gives serenity like no other place.

Brief History
Once known as Tewin Mill, a large mill once stood and indeed, existed from as far back as 1086. It was a water mill for grinding corn and from 1760 to 1803 it was converted into a mill for polishing concave and convex glass for spectacles. Features from the original mill remain today such as the sluice gate site, the mill pond wall, steps in the woodland, several grinding stones and an underground waterway leading to the stunning Backwater. Over the years, there have been several mills on this site but the last one was pulled down in 1911.
For the last 53 years, the house has belonged to the Knight family and has been a wonderful family home during this time.

Over many years of the Knight’s tenure, the gardens have been extensively planted with numerous specimen trees and shrubs around the estate. Sacks of daffodil bulbs were also planted along the river, in the woodland and the orchard and these particular areas are truly beautiful sight in spring. Given the gardens standing within the area, the Knights opened the gardens many times for charity, for the National Garden scheme and Isobel Hospice.

The Knight family embraced organic methods and kept weed killer to a minimum, so the gardens could thrive and benefit from the many wild flowers now occurring in the naturally moist soil. This has encouraged self-seeded bulbs spilling over the straight lines of the borders and gives a naturalistic feel.

The current gardener has been working at The Mill House now for over 30 years and no doubt would be a worthy asset to the new owner giving his vast experience and knowledge of these gardens and grounds.
