Merrydown is very well situated in a secluded spot close to the centre of Tarrant Hinton, a popular village on the eastern edge of Cranborne Chase surrounded by lovely rolling countryside that is designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). Although the four Tarrant villages at this end of the valley (Gunville, Hinton, Launceston and Monkton) are very rural, they are by no means isolated and there is a thriving community in the valley. There is a church, busy village hall and a rather good wine shop in this village, and a good pub down the valley in Tarrant Monkton (The Langton Arms). The attractive Georgian market town of Blandford Forum is only a short drive away by car or by bus and has a good range of shops and other amenities. For a wider range of amenities, Salisbury and Poole are both within half an hour’s drive, and communication links from the village generally are good with a main line railway station nearby in Salisbury with fast regular trains to London Waterloo. The business centres along the south coast, Poole, Bournemouth and Southampton are within easy driving distance and from there you can link via the A31 onto the M27 and M3 to drive to London, and to Southampton and Bournemouth airports. The surrounding countryside provides many good opportunities for sport and recreation with excellent walking, riding and cycling all around, and the coast is under an hours’ drive to the south. This area has also become extremely popular because of the wide selection of schools at all levels. There is a village primary school nearby in Pimperne and good secondary schools in Blandford and Wimborne as well as the grammar school in Poole. The excellent choice of public schools in the area includes Bryanston, Milton Abbey, Canford and Clayesmore with prep schools nearby including Dumpton, Castle Court, Sandroyd and Knighton House.
