Full description

HISTORICAL NOTES 6 Lower Street was one of the villages bakeries, known as Banhams Bakery and on Sundays the local residents would take their joints to the bakery and cook their dinner. They would arrive with the meat in a baking tin, Yorkshire pudding in a jug ready to be poured round the meat and a tub of dripping for the potatoes. On Saturdays their cakes would be baked for them and they could buy raw dough and take it home to add fruit, sugar and an egg to make dough cake. The building has also served as a grocers in the past and still traded until 1979 when it was colloquially known as Mrs Annettes.

The adjacent barn was Saunders Butchers and used to stretch right out to the street. It is a tad smaller now than the original structure but retains a lot of the beams and timbers.
DESCRIPTION We believe the property dates back to the early/mid 1800s. The elevations at the front are very attractive Doddershall brick beneath a slate roof, whilst the brickwork at the rear of the house is painted, partially under a slate roof and partially under clay tiles. Both the accommodation and gardens are presented extremely well and there is a substantial barn with the potential to adapt or convert for a variety of uses.

The entrance is at the back of the house into a hall off of which is a utility room and cloakroom. Further along is the main lobby containing the principal staircase, where large double doors open into the family room which has a wood floor and quadruple aspect. The sitting room is an L shape and slightly split level and would have been the original shop and living area. It is a spacious room with cast iron radiators, floorboards and an open, working fireplace. The kitchen was the bakehouse and the cooker actually resides in the same spot the old oven would have occupied. The units are Cook and Lewis Carisbrooke design in a taupe finish with wine racks and concealed lighting complimented by black granite worktops. Over the butlers sink is a mixer tap and pull out sprayer. Integrated are a dishwasher, fridge, freezer and Belling range oven that has six gas burners, two ovens and a grill. There is an extractor fan, downlighting and in the ceiling are two light wells. The room where the dough making and prep would have taken place is now the dining room. The beams are still evident as is the loft trap through which the flour sacks were dropped. In the conservatory is a quarry tiled floor, it is brick and timber construction and to the side is a boiler room; double doors open to the garden.

Two of the first floor rooms are accessed from a staircase in the hall. They are interconnecting and currently utilised as a spare room and office. The immediate thought is that they could be a master or guest bedroom and ensuite The main landing is from the staircase in the lobby where the loft area above is part boarded and insulated with a ladder and lighting. The master suite has a dressing area complete with wardrobes and a nicely fitted ensuite. The overhead rainfall shower is a power shower and there is a porthole window. The other two bedrooms are both doubles, each has wardrobes along a wall, one having light oak doors and the other country pine. In the bathroom is a white suite, Amtico flooring and a shower attachment over the bath.

OUTSIDE Across the front are railings and a flower bed, behind iron gates is a driveway and parking. Beyond the entrance is a very pleasant two tier stone courtyard and two sets of steps up to an elevated garden which is extremely pretty and private. There is a manicured lawn and surrounding it an abundance of established planting including flowers, shrubs and trees alongside a variety of roses. At one end is an ornamental pond, and there are seating areas and arbours draped in wisteria and vines, it is all quite beautiful.

THE BARN Timber framed now with a tin roof, the front portion retains the original cobbled stone floor. As previously mentioned the barn originally served as a butchers. In 2008 planning permission was granted for the demolition of the barn and the erection of a new building with the same footprint that would provide a two storey, one bedroom annexe.
