Area info
Mepal is a lovely village, situated near to the Cathedral City of Ely. The village has a pub and guest house (The Three Pickerels), a post office, village shop and a primary school. Former public houses include the Cross Keys, in which Clement Freud lived when he was Member of Parliament for the Isle of Ely in the 1970s and early 1980s. From Monday to Saturday Mepal has a two-hourly bus service (no Sunday service) to Chatteris, Ely and Cambridge. Mepal is part of the East Cambridgeshire district, and is located just north of the A142 road between Ely and Chatteris.

Wisteria House - History
The house today owes its present appearance to works undertaken in the 1830s and 40s by the then owner William Cole. He considerably enlarged and remodelled the existing eighteenth century farmhouse in an imposing Neo-classical style. His improvements added large reception rooms on the ground floor and bedrooms above. This extension and remodelling work was to an earlier, four bay, eighteenth century, two storey brick and tile roofed house. The farmhouse was Cole's principal residence from which he administered a considerable estate in the local parishes comprising several farms.
A major fire devastated the village in the 19th century, thus very few remaining buildings date from before the 19th century. The East of England Buildings Preservation Trust acquired the property in 1994 and restored the envelope of the building in 1995.
Today Wisteria House is one of the most impressive private residences in the area of Ely and its surrounding villages.

Grade II listing detail:
House. Mid-late C18, and c.1840. Local gault brick, part plaster rendered. Plain tiled steeply pitched roof with flush end stacks. Two storeys and attic. Two dormers. Central two storey canted bay flanked by two symmetrically disposed windows at each storey. Adjoining on east side c.1840 part. Gault brick and hipped slate roof with bracketed wood eaves cornice. Projecting entry and hall bay has moulded wood architrave to first floor twelve pane hung sash above doorway with swan's neck pedimented door case, plain frieze-and entablature on panelled pilasters. Panelled door and fanlight with glazing bars. Two similar recessed window openings without wood surrounds to each floor. Adjoining on the south west a crinkle-crankle wall. Early C19. Red and gault brick, stretcher bond. Of approximately seven undulations with doorway in four centred arch.

The Serpentine Wall
Some of the grounds/gardens from the house were divided by a serpentine boundary wall (now listed), also known as a crinkle crankle wall, a crinkum crankum, or ribbon wall. This unusual type of garden wall economizes on bricks, despite its sinuous configuration, because it can be made just one brick thin. If a wall this thin were to be made in a straight line, without buttresses, it would easily topple over. The alternate convex and concave curves in the wall provide stability and help it to resist lateral forces, as well as creating the perfect conditions for plant growing due to the light and shelter afforded by its shape.

Both crinkle and crankle are defined as something with bends and turns (Webster's), but the term is also thought to come from Old English meaning zig-zag. The earliest reference to this meaning has been cited in 1598, but it was not until the 18th century that the term began to be applied to wavy walls. At that time these garden walls were usually aligned east-west, so that one side faced south to catch the warming sun and were historically used for growing fruit.
Many crinkle crankle walls are found in the East Anglia area of England where the marshes of the fen country were drained by Dutch engineers starting in the mid-1600s. The walls' construction is attributed to these engineers who called them slangenmuur, meaning snake wall. The county of Suffolk claims at least 50 examples, twice as many as in the whole of the rest of the country, and where crinkle crankle is said to derive from a local dialect. In the estate village of Easton the noted crinkle crankle wall running from the former manor house to All Saints Church is supposed to be the longest existing example. In Lymington, Hampshire, there are a least two examples of crinkle crankle walls. The oldest is thought to have been constructed at the time of the Napoleonic Wars (1803-1815) by exiled Hanoverian soldiers living in the adjacent house.
