Full description

Tenure: Freehold

A 3 bedroom Gothic-style Victorian lodge house designed by an important local architect. No chain.

Chelmsford station (Liverpool Street from 34 minutes) 1.3 miles (on foot 1 mile), A12 (Junction 16) 3.3 miles, M25 (Junction 28) 13 miles, Stansted Airport 20 miles, Canary Wharf 35 miles.

Lodge House is situated a third of a mile from Moulsham Street and only a mile from the centre of Chelmsford. The city provides an excellent choice of amenities including a bustling shopping centre, some excellent state schools, three superb private prep schools (two of which are on New London Road), two outstanding grammar schools, a well-known independent school (New Hall), a station on the mainline into London Liverpool Street and access onto the A12.

The former cemetery chapel and lodge complex is on Chelmsford’s register of buildings of local interest and was designed by local architect Charles Pertwee between 1885 and 1886. Charles Pertwee also designed Oaklands House, which has been home to the Chelmsford and the Essex Regiment museums since 1930, and the lodge was used as the museum’s offices until it was sold in 2006. It has since been converted as part of a development scheme of duplex apartments and mews houses.

An attractive stone entrance block, incorporating the chapel and lodge, has a triple-arched entrance with a half-timbered gable and automated gates and intercom leading through to the private complex. The Lodge is situated on the right hand side (facing south) and enjoys views over the mature grounds of the cemetery.

The building is light and airy and has tremendous character, with many original features including high ceilings, mullion windows and stained glass. The accommodation is arranged over two floors, with a reception hall, sitting room, dining room, kitchen and cloakroom on the ground floor and three bedrooms and a family bathroom above.

There are integrated appliances in the kitchen including an oven, a hob, a fridge, a freezer, a washing machine and a dishwasher. The current owners have recently upgraded the central heating installing a new boiler with remote functionality, and there is an integrated sound system with speakers in every room throughout the house. There is also a security system.

The private garden has space for a table and chairs and the remainder is laid to lawn. There are two residents' parking spaces at the front of the house and allocated visitor parking.

Mains water, gas, electricity and drainage. Communal bin store.

Strictly by prior appointment with the sole agents Savills.

Square Footage: 1,042 sq ft

From Chelmsford town centre and Parkway - proceed south-west on the A1099 (New London Road). Continue for approximately two thirds of a mile before turning right onto Writtle Road. Continue along Writtle Road, over the railway bridge and Lodge House will be found on the left hand side.
