Description

The former cemetery chapel and lodge complex is on Chelmsford's register of buildings of local interest and was designed by local architect Charles Pertwee between 1885 and 1886. Charles Pertwee also designed Oaklands House, which has been home to the Chelmsford and the Essex Regiment museums since 1930, and the lodge was used as the museum's offices until it was sold in 2006. It has since been converted as part of a development scheme of duplex apartments and mews houses.

An attractive stone entrance block, incorporating the chapel and lodge, has a triple-arched entrance with a half-timbered gable and automated gates and intercom leading through to the private complex. The Lodge is situated on the right hand side (facing south) and enjoys views over the mature grounds of the cemetery.

The building is light and airy and has tremendous character, with many original features including high ceilings, mullion windows and stained glass.
