Comments from the architects
The scheme was designed by award winning Lewes-based architects BBM Sustainable Design. The proposed new scheme, overlooking the South Downs Way, has been designed with circular economy principles and sits in harmony with the surrounding downlands. After the original 1950s house was completely destroyed by a fire in 2017, BBM Sustainable Design was appointed to develop a proposal for a replacement dwelling on the same site. The resultant "circular" design of Streat Hill Farmhouse minimizes its impact on the natural environment by re-using and recycling existing materials, reducing waste, and putting in place closed loop systems such as employing a "resource map" to find locally-sourced materials.

Location

Streat is a village in the Lewes district of East Sussex. Set within the South Downs National Park there is a parish church dating back to the 11th-century. Less than 4 miles from Ditchling, 5 miles from Lewes and only 7 miles from Brighton there are fantastic commuter links with easy access to the A27 and both road and rail links to Gatwick and London. Nearby villages also include Plumpton & East Chiltington.

Plumpton is divided into two, with Plumpton Green being to the north, where you will find the Station with fast services to London (Victoria), Lewes and the coast. There is a junior school in the village, along with a thriving village shop and Post Office, church and two pubs. It is a very active village with playing fields, clubs and societies. Plumpton race course is also a very popular venue throughout the season. Plumpton Agricultural College is well established with its historical buildings and grounds. East Chiltington is a delightful, almost secret, hamlet in rural surroundings.

Lewes is a unique shopping and leisure destination, offering a wide range of local shops and independent boutiques. Dining out in Lewes is a pleasure, from the gastronomic delights on offer at Cote and the Jolly Sportsman in nearby East Chiltington, to the wide range of gastro pubs, many of which support the resident Harvey?s Brewery. Visit the farmers? market on the first Saturday of every month to pick up some delicious local fare. Pop into Bill?s for a cuppa or something more substantial from the mouth-watering menu. Have a pint of Harvey?s, the local brew, and take in some music in one of the many friendly pubs in the area. The new Depot cinema, close to the station is a major asset to the town.

Schooling in Lewes is exceptional and there are a range of well-regarded private and public schools, to include the famous Lewes Old Grammar School which can trace its origins back to the educational foundation started by Agnes Morley during the reign of Henry VIII. South Downs College is located in Lewes offering both full and part time courses and of course the University of Sussex is only 3 miles to the south west at Falmer.

Plumpton station is less than 3 miles from Streat and Lewes Station is around 5 miles away. From Lewes you will be able to get direct trains to London and along the South Coast. By road Lewes can be reached easily via the A27 which links routes to the M23 and other major A roads in the South East.
