Full description

The Old Bakehouse is situated in the picturesque Start Bay village or Torcross, right in the heart of the South Hams; 5 miles from Dartmouth, 6 miles from Kingsbridge and 12 miles from Salcombe by road.

The entire locality is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and offers a wealth of opportunities for exploration and adventure. Torcross village is located at the southern end of one of England's largest fresh water lakes, known as Slapton Ley. The lake is only separated from the sea by a narrow shingle ridge known as Slapton Line. Homeowners are permitted to keep a boat on the beach in Torcross, there are no mooring fees.

The main beach, known as Slapton Sands, is a three mile long pebble beach used in the Second World War as a practice site for the Normandy landings. Today there is plenty of evidence of this history and a memorial marking the events. A little further on are the seaside villages of Beesands and Hallsands, a beautiful walk on the South West Coastal Footpath towards the Lighthouse at Start Point.

Start Bay is also renowned as a fishing location and the villages of Torcross and Slapton boast some fine pubs, cafes and restaurants.

The A38 Devon Expressway provides links to the south of Plymouth and Exeter to the north. Exeter provides links to the M5 motorway and London and Bristol. There are regular rail services to London Paddington from Plymouth. Exeter International Airport provides an ever increasing number of domestic and international flights including two flights a day to London City Airport.
