Full description

This charming cottage, steeped in local history is now known as 39 Market Street, Standish, began around 1670 on the site of previous buildings dating back to the 1100s. In 1703 it opened for business as a coaching inn, known as the Eagle and Child, serving both local customers and the many foot, horse and carriage travellers making a welcome stop on their long journeys north and south along what is now the A49.
The inn also hosted the local magistrate's court, where petty criminals who had been held in the tiny stone jail behind the inn would be tried and if found guilty, taken immediately to the stocks across the road for justice to be served by the people of the village! Many fascinating cases and inquests are documented to have been heard in the Eagle and Child up to the late Victorian era.
In 1917, like many public houses at the time, underused as a result of World War 1, the Eagle lost its license and ceased trading. It remained empty until the Great Standish Sale of the early 1920s when it was bought from the estate of Lady Helene de Standish by a local shopkeeper and her husband, a miner. When he died in 1930, the owner moved to a smaller property nearby and gave the building to her daughter and son-in-law, on condition that they opened a butcher's shop. They, and later their daughter and son-in-law, continued to run the business as G. Worthington Butchers for the larger part of the century. It was awarded a grade 2 listing in 1961 by English Heritage in recognition of its contribution to the conservation area around the stunning St. Wilfrid's Parish Church, Wigan borough's only grade 1 listed structure.

The shop closed in 1994 due to retirement and for the first time in its history the property became a family home. Between 2014 and 2017 it received some much-needed TLC in the form of a total renovation and modernisation by the current, fourth generation owners. As well as a complete new roof, new drainage system, plumbing and electrics and a total rebuild of the gable end using salvaged brick, the renovation included the discovery and restoration of beams, fireplaces and many other original features which had become hidden over the centuries. Pride of place goes to the 17th century stone flags which stretch throughout the ground floor, some of which are two metres in size.
The floorplan on ground floor briefly comprises of entrance porch, Dining room, kitchen, sitting room, family room, bathroom, utility. On the first floor there are three double bedrooms, study and three-piece family bathroom

Externally affords a delightful large rear garden with extensive decking on several levels including a roofed veranda, a small orchard with fruit trees whilst there is also a patio area just perfect for outdoor dining and is surrounded by mature trees offering a superb level of privacy. Off-road parking facilities are on the driveway for several vehicles. We would highly recommend an internal inspection of this lovely family home.
