Chatteris House was built in 1828 as a private residence with three storeys and a basement. At the end of the nineteenth century the Seward family who ran auctions in the Auction Yard next door, occupied it. The Sewards sold the house in 1954. It was used for a time as a tractor showroom with flats above, a grocery shop, furniture store, an English resturant and eventually became an Indian restaurant.
