THE STORY

Basking in the sunshine on the terrace at Chestnut Cottage, the owners of the attractive detached house relish the sensation of being in their very own world. "It is so secluded here," one of them explains. "We moved here from London about 15 years ago and loved the privacy it offered. We are within easy reach of everything we need as Bagshot is so close and yet this location is so quiet and private." Gated Chestnut Cottage sits in approximately two acres of beautiful grounds next to Swinley Forest. "The air quality here is very good and the surroundings make you feel as if you are on holiday every day of the year," she adds.

ROYAL CONNECTIONS

The exclusive Dukes Covert development dates back to the early 1960s. "Our plot is especially large as it was home to the man responsible for all the houses," she explains. Swinley Forest is owned and managed by the Crown Estate. Although now mostly a modern plantation of Scots pines, the area was once part of Windsor Forest. Swinley Park within the forest once surrounded Swinley Lodge where the king kept the royal staghounds in Georgian times. "We loved the space offered by the property and its surroundings," the owner explains. "Since moving here, we have updated the house itself, installing a new Megaflow heating system rewiring and redecorating. We also converted the garage into a dining room and built a new bedroom on the floor above."

A WARM WELCOME

Today, the sunny home is entered via a lobby and then the reception hall. This leads into the dining room to the right and then the splendid drawing room, which has two sets of French windows on to the expansive terrace and garden. To the left of the hall is the kitchen, which leads through into the breakfast room, where there are more French windows, and the utility room. "The drawing room is one of our favourite places to spend time," she admits. "It is lovely in the summer when the doors are open and is cosy on winter nights when we light the wood-burning stove we installed."

BEAUTIFUL BEDROOMS

All four bedrooms and the family bathroom are on the first floor. "All the bedrooms are very nice," she says. "Ours - the new one above the garage - is especially large." There could be scope to further extend the accommodation at Chestnut Cottage, she suggests. "Subject to the relevant planning permissions there could be potential to go up into the loft or to extend outwards. We did consider it when the children were here but now they have left we feel it is time to move on."

OUT AND ABOUT

From Chestnut Cottage there are wonderful places to walk, horse-ride and cycle. There are superb green open areas to visit as a family for an hour or two or for the whole day. Nearby Swinley Forest has a hands-on science attraction called The Look Out Discovery Centre; a Go Ape climbing area and an Iron Age hill fort known as Caesar's Camp. It also takes just five or 10 minutes by car to reach Chobham Common, Windsor Great Park, Virginia Water and Ascot Racecourse, which are all known for their beauty. Chobham Common is the largest National Nature Reserve in the south-east of England. It is also a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). "There are places to play golf close by and we can be at the races in Ascot within five minutes," she points out.

A HAPPY HOME

Bagshot is well served by good schools, shops and leisure amenities. Windsor is also within easy reach and there is superb access into London, as well as to Heathrow and Gatwick Airport. "We have thoroughly enjoyed living here," the owner adds. "We are sad to be leaving now but will take so many memories with us - barbecues with the children and grandchildren in the summer and Christmases spent together with the log-burner going. This has been a very happy home."

SETTING THE SCENE

Chestnut Cottage is set in mature, leafy grounds of approximately two acres. The property is gated and offers substantial parking on a spacious driveway. There is also a garage. To the rear, the private grounds include beautiful, landscaped gardens and a fabulous sun terrace for outside dining and entertaining.
