SETTING THE SCENE

Elwyn House is set in magnificent grounds. It is entered via electric gates and a sweeping, tree-lined driveway, with CCTV. To the front of the house is ample off-road parking. The mature garden is divided into three sections, with generous and safe space for children to play. There are lawns and leafy trees. The gardens include a thatched gazebo, with electricity and lighting, a log area and a summer house. The grounds offer exceptional privacy.

STUNNING HOME

It was 16 years ago now that the couple moved to Elwyn House. Today it is a sumptuous and stylish home, which includes five bedrooms - four of which have en suite bath or shower rooms - a self-contained annexe and a fantastic kitchen, dining and living room. "We spent about 12 to 18 months enjoying living here before we started to make changes," Mick recalls. "Initially we built the wall and had electric gates and CCTV installed then we carried out interior work to the house - creating the Jack-and Jill bathroom between two of the ground floor bedrooms, for example - before converting the garage into the annexe. This has its own bedroom, en suite shower room and open-plan kitchen and living area, with French windows."

LIGHT THROUGHOUT

Today, visitors enter the home via an impressive double front door which opens into a spacious, airy reception hall, with a Spanish tiled floor and wonderful galleried landing above. "The whole house is very light throughout," he observes. "It is painted in an Egyptian cotton shade." To the left are the elegant reception rooms: an inner hallway leading to an inviting dining room and drawing room; there is also a useful study. The drawing room is a spectacular, double-aspect space, which is magnificent for entertaining, explains Mick. "It has a beautiful sandstone chimney breast, with a double-sided fire in it. This can also be enjoyed from the dining room, making both rooms especially nice in the winter and at Christmas time."

FAMILY LIVING

Also on the ground floor, is the appealing kitchen, dining and living room. This fabulous area has been cleverly fitted out with a practical yet stylish kitchen at one end, featuring bespoke units, a central island and Corian work surfaces. The other area is currently used as a snug, with comfortable seating and French windows on to the garden. "We spend a lot of time in the kitchen," Mick admits. "It is a nice place to relax and in the summer we like to keep the doors open." Ideal for family living, this could also be arranged with dining furniture or could be perfect for a family with small children. The arrangement of reception rooms had made entertaining at Elwyn House a sheer pleasure, he enthuses. "We have so many lovely memories of occasions spent here with friends and family, including our 25th wedding anniversary when we had a couple of marquees in the garden."

SUMPTUOUS SUITES

The bedroom and bathroom accommodation make it easy to accommodate overnight guests in exceptional comfort. To the right of the reception hall is a wing which includes the family bathroom and three bedrooms. Two of these have access to the Jack-and-Jill bathroom. The other is a versatile space which could have a variety of uses. Upstairs, there are two more bedrooms: the guest suite has an en suite shower room while the master bedroom has access to a private dressing room as well as a shower room. "Then, of course, we have the self-contained annexe on the ground floor, which could be ideal for a family member or as further guest accommodation," he adds.

SUPERB SETTING

Elwyn House has been carefully designed to offer great opportunities for outdoor living as well. The large garden comprises areas for children to play and adults to relax, and for outside dining. "We have three different sections," Mick explains. "There is a thatched gazebo, with electricity and heating where you can sit out into the evening and a summer house with a hot tub. With three sets of double doors on to the garden at the back, there is a nice flow between the indoor and outdoor spaces." The situation of the house offers further opportunities for outdoor living, with proximity to picturesque Fenland walks. At the same time, there is access to good schools, shops and railway stations with fast connections into London. "From March you can catch the train to Peterborough and be in London within an hour and a half or you can drive in just over an hour," he says. "This really is a unique place to live and the house itself is a beautiful home, with so much character."
