A well situated, attractive country house set in beautiful grounds.

Felsted: 4 miles, Great Dunmow: 8 miles (access to A128 at Great Dunmow), Chelmsford: 8 miles (Liverpool Street from 35 minutes, access to A12 at Chelmsford).

Buckshorns is approached over a country lane, beautifully situated in secluded grounds to the west of the village of Great Leighs. Great Leighs provides the usual village amenities, including a village shop, a primary school and a public house.

There is a wider variety of shops at Felsted with good shopping centres at Braintree and Chelmsford.

There are a number of other schools in the area, including Felsted.

For the commuter there is a fast-train service from Chelmsford to London Liverpool Street and ready access onto the A12 at Chelmsford and onto the A120 at Great Dunmow which links with the M11.

Description

Buckshorns was built in the 1930s, extended by the present owners. It is substantially built of brick under a tiled roof in the Tudor style with elevations finished in herringbone brickwork, exposed timbers and enhanced by leaded light windows. The house provides good accommodation, of particular note being the drawing room, a more recent extension built in keeping with the rest of the house overlooking the garden and with doors out onto the terrace, the sitting room with its deep fireplace and exposed timbers, and the dining room. On the first floor two of the bedrooms have en suite bathrooms and the majority of the bedrooms enjoy southerly views over the grounds. Surrounding the house are the beautiful, well maintained grounds surrounded by mature woodland and a particularly useful range of garaging and outbuildings.

Located to the north of the house is a cottage, which is available if required by separate negotiation.

ACCOMMODATION
A heavy oak front door opens into the lobby and hall and cloakroom. Accessible through an anteroom is the drawing room with doors out onto the rear terrace and with a secondary staircase to the first floor and bedroom 6. Doors off the drawing room open into the summer room, glazed on two sides and with a bathroom off. Off the hall is a sitting room with exposed beams, leaded light windows overlooking the grounds and French windows onto the terrace, with a large, deep red-brick open fireplace. Adjacent to the sitting room is a dining room and family room overlooking the grounds to the south. A kitchen/breakfast room is fitted with a range of wall and floor units, off which is a store room, a door through to the lobby with a cloakroom, boiler room and utility room. The main staircase rises up to the landing to the bedroom accommodation. To one end of the house is the master bedroom off which is a second bedroom and a door through to the sixth bedroom which is also accessible from the drawing room below with a separate staircase. There are four further bedrooms, one with an en suite bathroom and a store room, and a family bathroom.

OUTSIDE
Buckshorns is approached through double gates which give access to a wide gravel drive, passing between mown verges and leading to a large parking area by the front door and two brick and pantile double garages, one surmounted by a weathervane with a garden store behind. On the opposite side of the parking area is a third double garage with loft space above. A branch of the drive leads to a small outbuilding and another outbuilding previously used for storing garden machinery.

The principal gardens are to the south and west of the house, adjoining which and extending the full width and depth of the house is a large Yorkstone terrace. Around the terrace are low brick walls with neatly trimmed box hedges within and steps down to the main garden which is laid to lawn edged by a gravel path, shrubs and mature trees. On the far side are shrubberies and a pond, overlooked by a summerhouse. To the southwest and west of the house are acres of mown lawns and outside the boundary of the garden are belts of woodland giving protection. To the north of the house are further lawns, an enclosed fenced vegetable garden and part of an orchard. Along much of the east of the boundary of the grounds is a long tree-lined "pond" which is crossed by a drive.

Square Footage: 5,879 sq ft
Acreage: 8.5 Acres

Directions

From Chelmsford take the A130/A131 road towards Braintree. At the roundabout to the south of Great Leighs take the third turning into the village and turn left by The Castle public house into School Lane. Proceed along the road over the bridge and after about half a mile turn right on a sharp left-hand bend into Dumsey Lane marked "no through road". The gates to Buckshorns will be seen a short distance along the lane on the left-hand side.
