Full description

If you are looking for a fantastic house in the lovely, popular Somerset village of Great Elm, then the Bake House will appeal to you. This home was built in 1989 using reclaimed material which combines modern building techniques with wonderful character features. The current owners have added further features to enhance both the practicality and aesthetics of the property making it a comfortable, light and attractive home.

The Old Bakehouse sits in an elevated position on a quiet lane in Great Elm with wonderful views over the valley behind. Entering the house into an attractive hallway with fitted storage cupboards and a convenient downstairs wc, one is drawn into the light, spacious kitchen diner. This is truly a great room, with many great features creating a wonderful family space. One of the kitchen’s features is the electric Aga in the inglenook fireplace, with the flagstone floors (reclaimed from the Shepton Mallet cider factory) and ceiling beams adding to the character.

Large windows allow light to flood in, and, in addition to the space for the dining table there is a useful island and fitted kitchen which contains an integrated dishwasher.  The kitchen contains an electric oven, microwave and gas hob. A glazed door leads to a conservatory/utility room and then out to a paved, walled courtyard.

The sitting room is a cosy haven, with glazed doors looking out over the courtyard behind.  A Charnwood Cove multifuel stove sits in an attractive stone fireplace, and an arched window between the hallway and sitting room makes a lovely feature.

Stairs from the hallway lead up to the first floor where there are four bedrooms and a family bathroom.  All of the bedrooms are a good size with fitted cupboards, deep window sills and double glazed windows.

The family bathroom has a roll top bath as well as a separate shower cubicle, and the floor has an attractive cream and black pattern using tiles from Fired Earth. Two windows in this room make it light and well ventilated.

Outside
Directly outside the back of a house is the secure, walled courtyard which attracts the morning sun.  A gravel driveway runs down the side of the house, and has an electronically controlled gate at the access point with the road.  The entrance driveway belongs to the house and where the drive widens at the courtyard it is shared with a neighbouring property each having two good sized parking spaces.  A gateway leads to an attractive, enclosed garden which features a patio and seating area at the highest point in the garden giving wonderful views over the countryside beyond.  A well-appointed garden room is currently used partly as a home gym and partly as a reading room, but would make a fantastic home office or treatment room for someone working from home.

Situation
Great Elm itself is an historic village approximately 2 miles to the North East of Frome and 12 miles south of Bath. The Macmillan Way long-distance path passes through the village and there are ample opportunities for walking and cycling along converted railway lines and alongside the Mells river Local amenities include Babington House, (Soho House’s country mansion), the Hauser And Wirth Art Gallery and Roth Bar in Bruton, the upmarket pub, the Talbot Inn, and a village shop and post office both 5 minutes away in Mells. Nearby, Frome is one of the South West’s leading market towns and was recently featured in the Sunday Times as the best place to live in Somerset. It has become a “foodie hipster haven” due to the influx of young families, with St Catherine’s hill at the centre of the artisan quarter. The town has a comprehensive choice of retail outlets and all the usual amenities. Founded in 2013, the “Frome Independent” is an award winning independent street market that is held on the first Sunday of every month and attracts 80,000 people a year.

Local primary schools include Mells C of E first school, Leigh on Mendip first school and Stoke St Michael Primary. Independent schools include All Hallows, Downside and the Bath schools: Prior Park, Monkton Combe and King Edwards.
Transport links are good with a railway station in Frome that connects to Westbury and from there, to London Paddington or the South West.

Directions
From Frome, head North on the A362 for about 1.8 miles. Turn left on to Hapsford Hill and enter Great Elm.
From Mells enter Great Elm and turn right by the Village hall.  The old Bake house can be found 100 yds down this lane on your left.
