The Vendor's View - Our family had been searching for a historic property in the Canterbury area for a while when this house came on the market and we knew it was the one. It combined the character and charm of a Kentish farmhouse with the privacy of a walled garden and yet within such close proximity to the city, schools and local amenities.
Cherry Garden Farmhouse can be dated from its architectural features to the early seventeenth century. The ground plan fits into this date and is of a type known as ‘lobby entry’. We have enjoyed living in a period property, particularly the two main fireplaces which create a lovely atmosphere.
As our family have been keen gardeners we will miss the pleasure of tending such a secluded garden stocked with a wide variety of plants and fruits and relaxing on the brick patio in the sunshine. This area of the city has a long association with cherries. By 1562 this part of St Dunstan’s and Harbledown were known as the Cherry Garden. A map dated 1705-06 shows the house and cherry gardens next to it.
The combination of a farmhouse within the city is an appealing one. There are frequent buses to the city centre and Whitstable from the end of the street. We will miss the easy walkability to St Dunstan’s, The Goods Shed Farmer’s Market, Canterbury West and the city in one direction and rural walks to Harbledown, Rough Common and Blean in the other.
