Full description

Bringing a historic building back to life.

The Grade II Listed building has been extensively refurbished by LivEco Homes who are building smaller award winning sustainable Eco Homes on the old farm site on the edge of Cardiff.

Great House Farm is a fantastic example of a late 16 Century (1580-1600) Welsh farmhouse which originally owned all the land up to Culverhouse Cross, it was the most prominent house in the local area along with the nearby St. Michael church which dates from AD 1254, both buildings were first mapped in 1776. EPC=D

The newly refurbished home will be the largest property on the new LivEco development, giving the site an architectural heritage, and it will once again be the most important building locally and so bringing a once derelict building back to life.

Fireplace Restoration - The main fire place had been completely blocked up, but we can now see the rare moulded jambs, original part of the cobbled hearth and the original sized bressummer (timber) over the fire and the smaller bread oven next to it. Even though the old timber had been removed hundreds of years ago we could calculate the exact original size from the stone quoins and have replaced it with a new magnificent piece of Welsh Oak from Usk. On the first floor another original blocked fireplace has been uncovered with chamfered jambs and timber bressummer.

Welsh Heritage - Originally the roof would have been thatched and then slated. We have reused the existing old welsh slates on the prominent front elevation with new slates on the rear elevation. The dog-leg staircase has been restored and washed and left as stone.

This farmhouse was central to a large local farm which thrived for hundreds of years. The local medieval pond would have provided ice to enable a fully stocked cellar of milk, cheese and wine, fragments of which have been recently found.

The newly refurbished home will be the largest property on the new LivEco development, giving the site an architectural heritage, and it will once again be the most important building locally and so bringing a one derelict building back to life.
