THE STORY

Before impressive Birnam was even built, the current owner knew this was exactly where he wanted to live. He found himself drawn to Monks Walk for its tranquil, leafy setting. "I loved the road because it was so quiet yet convenient," he recalls. "I knew it would be a lovely place for a family to live and I identified this particular plot as one I wanted to buy." Unfortunately, however, a Knightsbridge developer bought the land, he explains. "This house was then built on the plot but, when I saw it in 2000, I decided I wanted to buy it. It was a superb property, of a very high quality, and very similar to what I might have built there myself. It was a good size, with light, open and spacious accommodation."

INTERIOR DESIGN

Since then, the owners have updated and maintained the house itself and its immaculate interior meticulously. Early work saw the stylish kitchen opened up into the utility room and television room to make it more suitable for modern living. The kitchen itself was refitted to a bespoke, high specification design and all the bathrooms have been replaced with Villeroy & Boch sanitary ware. "We have redecorated the house five or six times over the years," he observes. "Doors, skirting boards, architraves and light fittings have also been replaced and we have brought in some interesting features, such as a beautiful pair of matching fireplaces, which are 100 years old and came from a house in Knightsbridge."

MODERN LIVING

The appealing accommodation at Birnam is arranged over three storeys. The property is entered at ground-floor level via a capacious, grand entrance hall. This leads to a cloakroom, snug or children's playroom and study, as well as the family room and drawing room, with its French windows on to the garden. The kitchen, breakfast and television room, which has bi-folding doors that can be pulled right back on to the terrace, is very much the heart of the house, explains the owner. "This is where we spend almost all of our time," he agrees. "The rest of the house is fantastic for entertaining, but this area is perfect for daily life." A door from the kitchen leads through to a lobby, with access to the triple garage and a second cloakroom.

HEIGHTS OF SOPHISTICATION

An elegant staircase from the reception hall sweeps up to a light, galleried landing giving on to all the main bedroom and bathroom accommodation. The master bedroom features a large bay window and has access to an en suite bathroom and dressing room. All four of the other bedrooms at this level also benefit from either an en suite bathroom or shower room. The staircase then rises again to the second floor, where two exceptionally large rooms are currently arranged as a gym and cinema room. "We have really enjoyed having these two spaces away from the rest of the house," he admits. "There is plenty of room for lots of equipment in the gym and the cinema room, to which you can escape to watch a film or the football, has a large screen and big speaker system."

FRIENDS AND FAMILY

Additional, self-contained accommodation can be found above the garage. "This was office space when we arrived, but we made it into an apartment, with a bedroom, sitting room and shower room. It could be ideal for a relative, as guest accommodation or for a nanny or au pair." Birnam, which sits in gated grounds, is surrounded by gardens that were landscaped approximately three years ago. "The gardens here are perfect during the summer months," he adds. "We spend a lot of time outside when the weather is warm."

SETTING THE SCENE

Substantial Birnam sits comfortably on its plot of approximately half an acre. The grounds are gated and offer generous off-road parking, as well as access to the triple garage. The landscaped gardens have been lawned and provide good terrace space for outside dining and entertaining.

WITHIN EASY REACH

The location of the property has also been ideal, providing good access to Ascot High Street and train station, as well as good roads, motorways and airports. "I have always found it very easy to travel into London and to Heathrow from here," he says. "There are health clubs, leisure centres and spas in the area, as well as places to take the children at weekends. We are close to a selection of very good schools and places to go shopping. We enjoy living in Ascot and so have decided to stay very close by when we move. What we will miss most about this particular house, however, is its very quiet setting."
