How to Choose a Removal Company

The process of moving home can often be a daunting and stressful time. There are a lot different elements to consider, not least the practicality of moving all of your worldly possessions from A to B safely, securely and cost effectively. Rightmove works closely with accredited removal firms across the UK and have put together the guide below to help minimize the stress of moving.

How many removal quotes do I need?

It's advisable to get quotes from 4-5 different removal firms. These quotes may vary in price depending on what service is offered; be sure to always check what is included in the price. Does your quote include packaging materials or is this an added extra? Is the cost inclusive of the firm packaging your items? Are they insured to move your high value items? It is a good idea to make sure you ask for everything to be written within your quotation.

A lot of removal companies request to survey your house prior to quoting; to price effectively they may want to see what you're moving to ensure they organise the right size fleet and enough members of staff to efficiently move your belongings. Be sure to also ask them about packing tips, to make your move even smoother.

When is the best time to move?

It's not always possible to dictate your move day; many home-movers try and move over the weekend to give them more time to unpack and settle. Be aware that Friday and Saturday are the busiest days for removal companies, therefore they may charge a premium for moving on these days. If you want to save some money, try to arrange an early-mid week move.

How much will moving home cost?

Unfortunately, the cost of moving home completely depends on what you are moving and how far. This is why it is always advisable to get a number of quotes, so you can get an idea what if is likely to cost. If you're looking to keep costs low, as well as organising an early-mid week move in a non-peak period (avoid school holidays), try comparing moving box costs - it may be cheaper to purchase them from your removal company rather than elsewhere.

How should I prepare for the move?

Organisation is key! Label your boxes by room so your chosen removal company can put your belongings in the right rooms at the other end, meaning you won't have to worry about carrying them up and down stairs or across hallways.

Moving home is a great opportunity to de-clutter. Do you need to take everything to your new home? Use this time to return borrowed goods, give to charity and even make some money off your unwanted possessions.

What if something goes wrong?

It's always a good idea to be prepared in the unlikely event something goes wrong during the moving process, so you can get the issue resolved quickly and without any added stress. Be sure to ask your chosen removal firm for a copy of their documents along with information about their complaints procedure should there be a problem.

Although not a legal requirement, many removals firms choose to be part of Redress of Ombudsman scheme, which are third parties that deal with complaints of all involved. It's worth noting that a Redress/Ombudsman service will only get involved after a certain amount of time - if a serious problem arises, you would need to contact the removal company in the first instance to give them a chance to resolve the issue.

Using a removal service that is backed by a Redress or Ombudsman scheme can put help put your mind at rest, knowing that your move is covered should any disputes occur. All of Rightmove's removal member offer full comprehensive removal services and are backed by the British Association of Removers of the Property Redress Scheme.

Should I tip the removal company?

Tipping is a common question, and it ultimately comes down to personal preference. It is not an expectation in the industry, however if you feel like they have done a good job, we're sure they'd be very grateful!
