Enjoy The Great Outdoors
Basildon is home to more leisure facilities, parks and open, green spaces than anywhere else in the county. Wat Tyler Country Park covers 125 stunning acres of woodland, ideal for long walks. Tucked away in the park are adventure play areas and quaint craft shops, the motorboat museum and even a miniature railway. The park is also the hub of community events, such as the Basildon Festival and Teddy Bears’ picnic. Other parks include the nearby Lake Meadows, and Norsey Wood in Billericay. It’s rich in wildlife, and home to 175 acres of ancient coppiced sweet chestnut and oak trees.
If you prefer vigorous exercise to a countryside stroll, construction is under way on the Basildon Sporting Village. Just half a mile from the town centre, it promises to be the best public sports facility in Essex, with a 50 metre international size swimming pool. It has even been named by LOCOG in the official Pre Games Training camp guide for London 2012.
