For many years, the Time Capsule leisure centre has been a centrepiece of the town's leisure facilities, comprising a swimming pool, ice rink and gym. Formerly a private estate, this 500-acre site gained country park status in the 1980s and is a popular location for picnics, nature trails and sunbathing alike.
Across town, the Summerlee Heritage Park offers a rather noisier way to spend an afternoon, with its evocative depictions of the area's social and industrial history. Alongside a new exhibition hall with interactive displays, it encompasses replications of an underground mine and workers' cottages from the 19th and 20th centuries, with Scotland's only working electric tramway also on-site.

Bounded by the M73 and A8 trunk roads, much of Coatbridge's popularity stems from its location ten miles east of Glasgow city centre and 35 miles from Edinburgh. Plans are at an advanced stage to convert the "missing link" A8 into a motorway as it cuts past the southern border of Coatbridge, further reducing the travelling time to Scotland's capital. However, the current roads network is still enough to inspire envy among residents of many less-conveniently situated towns.
The convenience of Heritage Gate as a commuter location is typified by the train lines that lie beyond the development's boundaries in every direction, hidden behind mature trees but offering tremendous rail links with the wider area.
This triangular estate is within easy walking distance of three different train stations - Kirkwood, Whifflet and Coatbridge Central. It's possible to reach Glasgow Central from Kirkwood within 25 minutes, while Coatbridge's eponymous Sunnyside station lies on the Glasgow to Edinburgh route, whisking people into Haymarket in under three quarters of an hour.
