Lifestyle

Out and about

Despite being a relatively small conurbation, Galston still offers all the essentials of daily life. The town has various retail amenities, including a post office, supermarket, bank, petrol station and general store. Meanwhile, a wider portfolio of shops is available just along the road in Kilmarnock, along with numerous restaurants, pubs and leisure facilities. Foremost among these is the town's Galleon Centre, where a swimming pool and ice rink are joined by a comprehensively appointed gym and dozens of aerobics and fitness classes.

Thanks to its position within the lightly populated East Ayrshire green belt, Galston is surrounded by countryside. That makes this an idyllic location for outdoor sporting enthusiasts, with an extensive path network lending itself to cycling, dog-walking and hiking. Neighboring Newmilns has a dry ski slope, and it is also the setting for the acclaimed Loudoun Mains Country Club, with a heated pool and gymnasium alongside a mini farm park, children's play area and a panoply of wildlife.

Resident Life

Arranged along a looping avenue, the 38 properties that comprise Meadowfield are all detached villas. Each available home has four bedrooms, an integral garage and all the ancillary amenities expected of modern executive properties, such as utility rooms, downstairs WCs and en-suites in at least one bedroom.

Thanks to its position behind established (and sought after) suburban housing, Meadowfield combines genteel surroundings with a refined and secluded ambience.

The development is being constructed on grassland, with uninterrupted vistas of fields at the estate's eastern boundary. This continues a theme of open space within Meadowfield itself, with a grassy area at the centre of the development.

Places of interest

Galston itself is primarily a residential town, but the area around it is rich in amenities and history. Four miles to the west of Galston, Kilmarnock has numerous attractions including Dean Castle & Country Park, with lovely walks through landscaped parkland and tours of the castle. Kilmarnock also boasts the famous Dick Institute, where art galleries and museum halls are situated, and the town is home to a popular cook school, where enthusiastic amateurs can home their skills under the tutelage of expert chefs.

Alongside Kilmarnock, other Ayrshire towns are also blessed with a wealth of attractions. Consider Ayr, for instance, where the world-famous Burns Museum is joined by the town's eponymous racecourse, the stunning Culzean Castle and Country Park and a seafront play park. Outdoor activities are prevalent throughout this lightly-populated county, and there are over 30 separate golf courses within a half-hour drive of Galston.

Other outdoor attractions include the visitor centre at Europe's largest wind farm (Whitelee at Eaglesham) and Troon's ever-changing marina.

Transport links

Standing in the heart of East Ayrshire, Galston can be used as a base to reach almost anywhere in Scotland's central belt. Its largest neighbour is Kilmarnock, less than five miles to the west along the A71 trunk road, with the A77 interchange also situated here. Upgraded to motorway status for much of its length, the A77 is the primary route to both Glasgow and the key towns of South Ayrshire, including Prestwick and Ayr, the county's capital. The wider motorway network can be reached in several ways, with the eastbound A71 joining the M74 at Larkhall, before continuing on towards Edinburgh, a few miles south of the parallel M8.

Galston's geographic centrality is underlined by more than mere road links, however. Prestwick Airport is close at hand and Glasgow Airport is also within comfortable driving distance.

Trains from Kilmarnock take around 40 minutes to reach central Glasgow, and with over a hundred spaces in the 24-hour car park outside Kilmarnock's grand red sandstone terminus the commute is stress-free.
