Wendover has a long historic past

Wendover is a delightful, historic, small town nestling at the foot of the Chiltern Hills in Buckinghamshire. The word Wendover is of Celtic origin and means “White Waters” pertaining to the stream that flows through the middle of the town. The earliest mention of Wendover was in 970 in the will of Aelfheah of Hampshire and Wiltshire who had lands in Waendofron. In the Domesday Book, Wendoure was a manor of Royal demise held by Edward the Confessor. During the 15th Century part of the town was owned by Anne Boleyn whose father held the Manor of Aylesbury among his many estates. There is still a row of houses in the town today known as Anne Boleyn’s Cottages.

Wendover has held a Royal Charter to hold a weekly market since 1464 meaning that officially it is a town rather than a village, although today many of the residents of Wendover like to refer to it as the latter. There is also a distinctive red brick spired clock tower at the crossroads in the centre of the town that was built in 1842, and ¡s now the Tourist Information Centre. Visitors to Wendover today are enthralled by the fact that though it sits just 36 miles from the Capital it has managed to preserve its quaint and rural appeal together with its many historical features.
