Rich History
Coleford’s rich history dates back as far as 1275 when it was part of the Royal hunting forest and takes its name from one of the two rivers that merged in its centre which, as its names suggests, was a fording point.

As the administrative centre of the Forest of Dean, and one of the oldest towns in the area, Coleford’s fascinating past is reflected in its historical buildings. Though they are mainly Georgian in appearance, many are facades covering much older buildings, which can be explored and discovered by embarking on one of the many ‘Coleford Town Walks’, which illustrate the history of the town.
