Leisure facilities
The Isle of Bute caters for a wide variety of interests and activities and there is no shortage of opportunities to pursue your existing passions, or to try something completely new.
Golf
Naturally, golf is universally popular and there are three golf courses on the island; at Rothesay, Port Bannatyne and Kingarth. In fact, Rothesay Golf Club is conveniently close to Eastlands Park, and benefits from the dramatic backdrop of the Firth of Clyde and the Kyles of Bute.
Sailing and Watersports
Being an island, there is complete access to the sea, and sailors, kayakers, and windsurfers are almost guaranteed to find an ideal location somewhere round Bute any day of the year. Circumnavigating the island is an enjoyable challenge for sailors and there is easy access to the Clyde's sea lochs and beyond to the west of Scotland.
A choice of berthing is available at Rothesay Harbour and Port Bannatyne Marina.
Fishing
Bute's inland freshwater lochs are popular with anglers for coarse and game fishing and Loch Fad is highly-regarded as a haven for keen fishermen, with boat and bank fishing available – and the chance of a record catch. And for those with a passion for sea angling, with living on an island you are spoiled for choice!
Walking and Cycling
The quiet roads, pathways and gentle landscape of the island make Bute a delight for walkers and cyclists of all abilities. And, thanks to the Scottish Outdoor Access Code, for those who wish to find their own routes, the island is yours to explore. Bute also has the West Island Way, thirty miles of waymarked moorland, forest and coastal track.
Horse Riding
For the equestrian-minded there are stables immediately behind Eastlands Park, and there is also a horse riding centre at Kingarth, which caters for riders of all ages and abilities. Offering riding tuition and hacks along coastal, moorland and hill routes.

Transport links
Only 35 minutes from the mainland, the Isle of Bute has all the advantages of living on an island with the convenience of the mainland a short trip away
Getting to, from or around Bute can be as simple or as adventurous as you like. By car, you can be anywhere on the island in minutes – and there are local taxis and buses as an alternative. And, for the convenience and safety of Eastlands Park school children, the Rothesay Academy school bus picks-up almost from their door.
By Sea...
With fast and regular ferry services, travelling to and from the mainland for motorists and pedestrians is easy. At Wemyss Bay, on the mainland, road and rail connections couldn't be closer, making for effortless access or onward travel. Towards the north of the island, there is also the "wee ferry" which operates between Rhubodach and Colintraive on the picturesque Cowal Peninsula.
Not surprisingly, in addition to ferries, Bute is a haven for craft of all kinds, from private yachts and cruisers to the Paddle Steamer Waverley – the last sea-going paddle steamer in the world. These possibilities certainly bring choice and adventure back into travelling!
By Air...
Bute may also be unique in offering practical access to a range of less conventional modes of transport. Light aircraft have access to the airfield near Kingarth and there is seaplane access at Port Bannatyne.
