The modern town of St Leonards was built in 1826 on land once owned and settled by the Levett family who arrived with William the Conqueror. Today, St Leonards forms part of Hastings – one of Sussex’s best kept secrets. St Leonards has several landscaped parks and gardens as well as a good shopping centre, a three-mile stretch of beach, a wide promenade and a cycle way which offers a leisurely way to enjoy the town. Hastings, with a four-mile beach, a cinema, theatres and several museums, is a charming old town peppered with half-timbered houses and intriguing alleyways, known locally as ‘twittens,’ which are home to an eclectic mix of designer boutiques, antique shops, specialist shops and High Street names. There’s always plenty going in Hastings including a number of annual events such as the Old Town Week in August, the Beer Festival in Alexandra Park and the immensely popular Seafood and Wine Festival.

St Leonards is extremely accessible – and, as such, is popular with commuters. The A21 from London to Hastings passes through the town and there are two railway stations: St Leonards in Warrior Square and West St Leonards, close to Mayfield Heights. The line from London’s Charing Cross to the South Coast via Tunbridge Wells serves both stations whilst the London Victoria service to Eastbourne only stops at St Leonards
