Historically, a market town based on the wool and lace trade, Brackley was built on the intersecting trade routes between London and Birmingham, Oxford and Cambridge. In 1215, the town was the site of a meeting between the rebel barons and the representatives of the King. As a result, King John and the barons were to have signed Magna Carta at Brackley Castle, but eventually did so at Runnymede. Though little of the castle remains today, Brackley’s long and interesting heritage is reflected in many historic buildings. At its heart, the wide, tree lined Market Place with its Georgian and Victorian houses and shops, still provides an attractive setting for the fine town hall, dating from 1706.

Today, Brackley benefits from a mix of high street stores and local independents, attractive cafés, restaurants and several pubs. A market is still held every Friday and on the third Saturday of the month, a farmers’ market offers an array of local produce. Other amenities include a fine range of parks and open spaces, a swimming pool and leisure centre, a choice of local schools and good healthcare provision. The local community supports many clubs and activities, while the town hosts a number of events throughout the year. These include a music festival, soapbox derby, festival of motorcycling and annual carnival. For motor racing enthusiasts, Brackley is home to the Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula One Team and Silverstone Circuit is just a short drive away.
