Whetstone is recorded in the Domesday Book and quietly existed for many centuries with agriculture as its main source of employment. Master, fellows and scholars of Trinity College, Cambridge were left land in the village during the 16th century and in 1764 they were granted the right to keep their sheep and cattle upon the common lands at certain times of the year.

Framework knitting was a source of income during the 18th century, but it was not until the 20th century that a new technology brought industry of a completely different kind to the village. For it was in Whetstone that Frank Whittle had his factory where the first jet aero engines were developed.

Today, Whetstone is a large village of some 7,000 inhabitants, with several local shops including a post office, chemist, general store and newsagent. There are three churches, two primary schools and a range of business premises, pubs and parks.

Further amenities include a doctor’s surgery and many local sports teams and clubs. You’ll find the nearby village of Blaby offers further shops and amenities, while the conservation area of old Blaby has a charming ‘olde worlde’ feel about it. Fosse Shopping Park, one of Britain’s largest out-of-town shopping parks, is a 3 mile drive away.
