From historic buildings to beautiful parks, from excellent schools to great leisure facilities and fine shops, this vibrant community delivers the perfect mix.

Okehampton offers a great family friendly environment, in a vibrant community, surrounded by spectacular countryside.

For evening entertainment, Okehampton offers a wide selection of eating places to suit all tastes, from 16th century inns to fine dining restaurants. Film lovers will like the New Carlton Cinema in Market Street, while for keeping fit, there are a number of venues in the area including Parklands Leisure Centre, with its comprehensive facilities and a swimming pool.

South of the town centre, Okehampton Castle, dating back to Norman times, occupies a beautiful setting above the River Okement, from where you’ll enjoy magnificent views of the surrounding countryside. As well as many interesting historic buildings, the town is also home to the Museum of Dartmoor Life.

For lovers of the great outdoors, Meldon Fields couldn’t be better placed. Simmons Park, at the heart of the town, offers a mature parkland setting for peaceful walks by the river, but it is the wealth of vastly differing landscapes surrounding Okehampton that really sets it apart. Nearby, lie the highest peaks of Dartmoor, with Yes Tor rising to over 600 metres. The moor’s ancient trackways provide you with a haven for walking and hiking, passing prehistoric settlements, stone circles and medieval tin workings. Peat bogs and fresh streams are features of the moor and the distinctly different coastlines of North and South Devon are both within reach.

Picturesque villages such as Lydford, Sampford Courtenay and Belstone are delightful places for you to visit, with Roadford Lake being particularly popular for watersports, fishing and birdwatching.

Local Shopping

At the heart of the town, the lively streets offer you a range of independent shops and national retailers. In addition, there’s a pedestrian shopping precinct at Red Lion Yard, and the charming Victorian Arcade where every shop is an independent trader. A choice of supermarkets is available, including Waitrose, and on the first and third Saturday of every month, a farmer’s market is held around St James’ Chapel Square, providing fresh local produce.

When you require a break from shopping, there are many cafés, pubs and restaurants located within the town centre.
