MARAZION
An ancient market town set on the shores of one of the most beautiful
bays in the world, with enchanting views of St Michael’s Mount.
The name Marazion is believed to derive from the Cornish “Marghas byghan” meaning “small market”, with the pronunciation changing over the years to Marazion. The earliest recorded market was in 1070 and the town was granted its first charter by Henry III in 1257, re–affirmed by Elizabeth I in 1595. It was the major town in this part of Cornwall until the late medieval period when it was challenged for commercial supremacy by Penzance.
From Marazion, all the rugged and spectacular beauty of the Land’s End peninsula is within easy reach. Penzance is a car journey of only 5–10 minutes and has an excellent range of local and national shops in its winding streets and alleyways. From here, a journey by ship or helicopter may easily be made to the glorious Isles of Scilly, with their sub–tropical climate. Or, visit the extraordinary Minack Theatre at Porthcurno and watch a Shakespeare play from an open air rock amphitheatre. Travel further west still to see the crashing grandeur of the seas at Land’s End, or inland to the eerie magnificence of the moorland in the north of the peninsula. Here, walk on through the hamlet of Zennor to the remote beauty of its cliffs and then visit beautiful St Ives with its picturesque harbour.
