Cranfield is probably most famous for its RAF connections and airfield which later became Cranfield Institute of Technology but is now known as Cranfield University. Along with the university, there are two well-respected schools in the village, the Lower School and Holywell Middle School. Older children can travel approximately 4 miles by bus to Wootton Upper School.

The village benefits from a number of local stores including a Co-op supermarket, newsagents, hairdressers and public houses.
