The region is steeped in history, yet it offers a wide range of leisure experiences and activities to suit everyone. The town is probably best know for its links with the poet Robert Burns, where he lived from 1791. Dumfries offers all of the facilities expected of an important town including a swimming pool, parks, two golf courses, nightclubs, libraries, film theatre in the Burns Heritage Centre, as well as good shopping with a mix of major stores and specialist shops. The town holds an annual Arts Festival and the yearly Guid Nychburris Festival, with the Crowning of the Queen of the South and is a colourful and enjoyable celebration of its warm and friendly spirit.
The Dumfries and Galloway region is mountainous with many peaks over 2000 ft and Scotland’s most southerly point is The Mull of Galloway. The area has several claims to fame including that it was home to the world’s first Savings Bank, founded in 1810 and now a museum. The world’s first steamboat sailed on Dalswinton loch in 1788 and legend has it that Robert Burns was a passenger on the one and only voyage!
