Leisure facilities
Bangor is fortunate to have its own Victorian Pier. Bangor Pier opened in 1896, and the old pier has stood firm - reaching out half way to the Isle of Anglesey. Bangor Cathedral has been a place of worship and prayer for almost fifteen centuries. Gwynedd Museum and Art Gallery is found behind Bangor Cathedral in the centre of the City. Sometimes known as Bangor Museum, the museum is Gwynedd's only general museum. As with any university town there is a wide selection of pubs and cafes.
Local shopping
Another claim to fame is that Bangor has the longest High Street in Wales. It is the region's main cultural and shopping centre, and the city centre has two modern shopping centres, plus a mix of national chain stores and smaller shops. Retail outlets can be found on Caernarfon Road, on the outskirts of the city. One of these is St. David's Retail Park, built on the site of the demolished St David's maternity hospital.
Schools and education
Bangor University and Coleg Menai are located in the city. Secondary schools include Ysgol Friars, Ysgol Tryfan, Hillgrove School and St. Gerard's School. There are also a number of primary and infant schools.
Nearest schools:
- Ysgol Gynradd Hirael - Primary (0.2 miles)
- Ysgol Glancegin - Primary (0.6 miles)
- Ysgol Gynradd Cae Top - Primary (0.7 miles)
Transport links
Bangor railway station serves the city. The Menai strait is bridged in two places and the main A55 road is carried over the strait by Thomas Telford's magnificent iron suspension bridge, opened in January 1826, and adjacent to this is Robert Stephenson's 1850 Britannia Tubular Bridge. Bangor has two rivers within its boundaries, the River Adda and River Cegin and Port Penrhyn was an important port in the 19th century. Bangor lies at the western end of the North Wales Path, a 60-mile (100 km) long-distance coastal walking route to Prestatyn.
