Leisure facilities
Maritime heritage
Whitstable is a town of 30,000 inhabitants situated on the north east Kent coast, five miles north of Canterbury. It is most famous for its oysters hence its nickname as the Pearl of Kent. Tourists flock to the town's annual Oyster Festival which runs for nine days in July and celebrates the tradition of oyster catching in the town which dates back to at least Roman times. Whitstable's maritime heritage is also a part of daily life with an active harbour and a number of excellent seafood restaurants that add to the town's unique charm. As well as the famous oyster festival, the town is also home to an annual sailing event dating back to 1792 known as the Regatta, and a popular May Day parade.
Feeling sporty
From the harbour you can walk onto one of the town's shingle/sandy beaches, popular with walkers, swimmers and water sports enthusiasts. Whitstable's Yacht Club is one of the oldest yacht clubs in England and hosts a number of events and competitions. The town also proudly hosts the International Waterski Championships every year. There are many other sports facilities in the town, including a swimming pool, bowling alley, badminton courts, 5-a-side football pitches and facilities for volleyball, cricket and tennis.
Leisure and culture
On the edge of town is Whitstable Castle which dates back to 1789. Its grounds are used as a public park and it's a real hub for community activities throughout the year, as well as being a town landmark. Other places of interest include the Whitstable Museum and Gallery, which has exhibits that focus on the town's seafaring traditions, the Playhouse theatre and the Horsebridge Arts and Community Centre. The latter is a stunning building designed as an upturned boat. Its three floors are home to an art gallery, learning area, conference rooms and a performance space.
Whitstable has a good selection of primary schools and one secondary school. Many students commute to schools in nearby Faversham and Canterbury, and information technology courses are offered at Whitstable's branch of Canterbury College.
Nearest schools:

Transport links
Despite its beautiful coastal location, Whitstable is also easily accessible from London and other parts of Kent via the A2/M2. The railway station is on the Chatham Main Line, which runs between Ramsgate in East Kent and London Victoria, passing through Broadstairs, Margate, Herne Bay, Faversham, Gillingham, Rochester and Bromley South.
Commuters are well catered for with an extra service to London's Cannon Street station on weekday mornings and from the station on weekday evenings, which takes around 1 hour and 30 minutes.
There is also a daily National Express coach service which runs from London Victoria and Ramsgate taking only 1 hour and 40 minutes while for more local travel, a Stagecoach bus service runs every twenty minutes to neighbouring Herne Bay and the beautiful city of Canterbury. The ports of Ramsgate and Dover offering services to Belgium and France are less than an hours drive away.
