Local Information

Leisure Facilities

Heanor is a small market town in the southern, rolling foot-hills of the
Pennine range of Mountains, set on a hill rising out of the gentle valley
formed by the Erewash River which feeds into the river Trent. Once a
county market town, its growth, along with that of its suburbs, Codnor,
Marlpool and Loscoe, dates from the industrial revolution which brought
the canals and railways to the region. Heanor was on the route of the
world's longest tramway which ran from Nottingham to Ripley.

The ancient Heanor Parish Church of St Lawrence dates back to the 12th century, though little of the old church remained after it was rebuilt in 1868. The 15th century tower is still intact.

Coal mining was once the dominant industry for Heanor, but all the pits
have closed down and now, new industrial development is actively
encouraged with several industrial estates having been built around the
town, offering opportunities for local employment.

For those simply seeking a breath of fresh air, the area is particularly rich with places in which to exercise, explore or simply unwind. Howitt Reach is 1.1 miles from Shipley Country Park; 700 acres of attractive and varied landscape. The park has earned the Green Flag Award for its quality greenspace provision, every year since 2008. In 2011 the park also achieved Country Park Accreditation from Natural England for its facilities and services.Whatever the season, there is always lots to see and do in the park - not only an acclaimed wildlife area, but it has an excellent visitor centre and offers the opportunity to explore the park on foot, bicycle or horse riding.
