Old Newton Hall, now a farmhouse, was built around 1690 and occupied, for many years, by the Richardson family, who frequently acted as bailiffs for Lord Sheffield's Blackwell estates. Jedediah Strutt's father (William) was a tenant of Newton Old Hall and Jedediah is said to have worked on his revolutionary stocking frame at the hall.
An old building adjoining Newton Hall was used as a coaching inn. This old inn was rebuilt in 1916 and intended for use as a station hotel, it being accepted at the time, that the LNER railway which was to be brought from Nottingham to Sheffield would provide a station at the railway bridge in Alfreton Road. This anticipated station, was in fact eventually built at Tibshelf.
Coal mining, on a small scale, had been carried out in the locality since medieval times with references to disputes between interested parties dating back to the 16th century.

Newton Fields is conveniently located in the upper Erewash valley which incorporates the surrounding villages of Blackwell, Hilcote and Westhouses. Newton Primary School, on Hall Lane, is also on the doorstep, as well as nearby comprehensive schools.
