Harold Griffin remains a family run firm, founded in 1847 by James Griffin when he was 26. James Griffin was son of a builder and trained as an engineer and set up business in Battersea High Street as a house agent and rent collector.
His younger brother William joined the business, and in 1880 his nephew Harold Griffin a trained Architect joined the firm.
Harold Griffin was also a member of the Surveyors and Auctioneers Institutes and set about establishing the firm as one of the main Surveyors, Valuers and Auctioneers practices within Battersea, undertaking property management, residential estate agency, Surveys, Valuations, Architectural work and occasional auctions.
Harold was a remarkable man with his experience and knowledge the business expanded and in 1895 they moved into larger offices at 54/56 High Street, Battersea and in 1910 they opened a City office first at 5 King Street, Cheapside, then 22 Water Lane, Great Tower Street, before finally moving to offices at 5 Coleman Street EC2 which were destroyed in the Blitz during the second world war. He not only worked relentlessly for his clients he was also a generous employer, a church warden, Master of the Coopers Livery Company in 1932, and was also a Justice of the peace for the London area.
His only son, Harold Griffin Junior joined the firm after the First World War, he was a member of the Incorporated Society of Valuers and Auctioneers. The business was moved to 187-191 Lavender Hill, Clapham Junction, opposite the former Town Hall (now Battersea Art Centre) where it remains today. Harold Griffin Junior enjoyed Auctioneering and increased the number of auctions undertaken and these were held regularly at their offices at Lavender Hill. He had two sons, Derek and Colin the former undertook residential agency for several years from an office in Northcote Road.
