About Emsworth
Emsworth is situated on the East Hampshire/West Sussex coastal plain, with Chichester Harbour linking with Langstone Harbour to encompass one of the most popular areas for maritime leisure facilities on the central south coast. It is situated virtually equidistant between Portsmouth and Chichester, and is a few minutes away from the M(A27). Emsworth has its own railway station which is situated on the Portsmouth Brighton Victoria line.
Emsworth has developed over three centuries from a small commercial harbour, which then developed into a specialist oyster fishing industry. Emsworth had a local serviceable fleet of oyster dredgers most, if not all were built locally at the Emsworth shipyard. Invariably there dredging exploits were best rewarded off the French cost and in the 1880's it was recorded that a skipper by the name of Hazle (coincidence!) of Nile St, Emsworth was lost with all hands in the storm.
More recently, Emsworth has developed from a small coastal hamlet to a medium sized town. Emsworth has managed to retain its traditional atmosphere which is reflected in its thriving comprehensive range of shops, most of which offer a personal individual service, and some of which have evolved spanning several generations of the same family, like Hazle & Co!
