ABOUT THE TOWN
Bognor Regis a vibrant seaside town, geographically situated 67 miles south west of London, 27 mile east of Portsmouth, 30 miles west of Brighton. Serviced by the A27, A259, A29 with rail links to Portsmouth and London. Sussex by the Sea as it has become known inspired Tennyson, Belloc and many other famous poets and writers throughout the ages. Other famous people to have visited or stayed in Bognor include Dante Gabriel Rossetti a Poet and Painter and founding member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, R C Sheriff a Play Write and Novelist from Kings Parade in Bognor Regis, Sir Richard Hotham founder of seaside Bognor at Hotham House. This enchanting destination lies between the South Downs and the Sea, from the rolling Green Woods and Downlands to the traditional Seaside Resorts, this is an area of infinite variety endowed with more hours of sunshine than any other place in Britain. Bognor Regis has the highest recorded sunshine hours in Britain, in 1996 and 1998 to reinforce its consistent good record the Met Office shows Bognor Regis has regular been near the top of the British sunshine league, this is because Sussex by the Sea lies in the ley of Selsey Bill, sheltered by the Isle of Wight and the South Downs, bad weather tends to track north or south leaving Bognor sunny and dry.
For over 200 years Bognor has been a famous seaside resort for its clean sandy beaches, safe bathing waters and invigorating sea air, which over the years have attracted millions of visitors. Not only has the town long proved popular with day trippers, but also has a endearing relationship with Royalty. The “dear little Bognor “ which Queen Victoria fondly remembered later became Bognor Regis after the successful convalescence of King George V in 1929. Bognor Regis has something to offer everyone, beaches a variety of shops and local entertainment, holiday centre for many visiting. Nestling at the foot of the beautiful South Downs, less than an hours drive from Portsmouth and Brighton which a direct rail connection to London.
To the south west of Aldwick is an area known as Pagham Harbour Nature Reserve which is a picturesque and important ornithological site visited by many every year.
Locally there is a number of restaurants, hotels and public houses, but with Chichester being no more than a 10 minute drive from Aldwick many choose to eat in that area.
Throughout the year there are many events held in the Bognor Area that attract people from local areas and much further afield. In late March we have the Regis Classic Tour with classic cars visiting Bognor Regis and raising money for Charity, in late April we have the Celebrity to switch on the Seafront lights, in may we have a widely supported 10K road race run around the streets of Bognor raising money for the Bognor Hotham Rotary Club, in June Hotham Park becomes a pleasant setting for The Last Night Of The Proms with Bognor Regis Carnival taking place in late July, with Carnival procession throughout the town ending in fireworks and a fun fair. A further motor show in late July in West Park and then the International Birdman Rally on the 15th of August. Becoming a regular feature now is a three day Rocks on the Prom music and entertainment open concert with various heritage open days entitled The Sands of Time.
At Bognor, we are conveniently located to participate in racing at Goodwood and the now world famous Goodwood Festival of Speed. Bognor is famous as a family entertainment resort founded by Bill Butlins at around the time of the Second World War. There are plenty of local courses for the Golf enthusiast including two courses at Goodwood and now Chichester Golf Centre located in Hunston with an 18 hole tower course, and 18 hole cathedral course, golf shops and equipment hire, a club house and a nine hole short course and 27 bay driving range.
The population at the 1996 census was 57,950. - Average age is 45 with a relative high percentage of this being retired people and in Aldwick a relatively high number of Senior Executives who commute.
