1 Tregenna Hill, St Ives, Cornwall TR26 1SE
In recent years St Ives has become one of Europe's premier holiday destinations, famed not only for its beautiful beaches and coastal paths but also for the maze of narrow, cobbled streets packed with restaurants, galleries, cafés and local bars. There are five sandy beaches, including neighbouring Carbis Bay, three of which are award-winning, blue flag beaches; the coastal paths provide a treat for walkers and bird-watchers alike.
The town is also renowned for its artist community; many artists live in and visit St Ives because the light is said to be special and, let's face it, it's a very beautiful place. There are galleries, art shops and artistic inspiration all over the town including the Tate, and the Barbara Hepworth museum and sculpture garden.
The town has a lovely mix of smaller, independent shops and high street stores. There are plenty of gift, ice cream and surf shops but also a great butcher, clothes shops and newsagents. There is a Co-op for groceries or an out-of-town Tesco some 10 miles away.
St Ives is great for eating out; there are lots of fish and chips shops, seafood restaurants including the award-winning Porthminster Café, The Loft, Black Rock and the Seafood Café; the Firehouse is great for steaks; there is a Pizza Express and lots of pubs doing great food.
St Ives has a lively sports scene; the leisure centre has a swimming pool and runs Pilates and tai chi classes; there is a surf school and lots of water sports going on. On the cultural side, there is an excellent theatre group, and September's festival of literature, music and poetry - three weeks of jazz, classical and pop bands alongside comedians, films and exhibitions - is an annual highlight.
St Ives and the surrounding area have some great schools; St Ives School is the local secondary, St Ives Junior School has been Ofsted rated as 'outstanding', and St Uny C of E School and Nancledra School are both 'good'.
St Ives is just 10 minutes from the A30 that connects it to other Cornish towns.
The St Ives Bay Railway Line runs around the coast and is a beautiful route. Trains to St Erth meet the main line and connect to other Cornish towns and to Plymouth, Reading and London Paddington and to cross-country services to Birmingham, Manchester and Glasgow.
Newquay Airport is less than an hour away with routes to UK and Irish airports as well as European destinations.
