    Our Property Department

    Charles Bennett is the head of the Property Department and started as a trainee Estate Agent in 1987. He works closely with Elaine Wilson and Wendy Hartley (Russel + Aitken's LLP two Senior Negotiators). The property team pride themselves upon helping each client achieve the best result possible every time.

    "From my first day as a trainee valuer the importance of communication was highlighted to me that is why either myself or Senior Negotiators will update our clients personally every week so if necessary we can discuss any changes that may enhance or speed up the sales process".

    The Property Department is open 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday and 10am till 1pm on Saturdays but Charlie is contactable out of hours via his mobile. Viewings are also available seven days a week and after 5pm. The ability to link with other departments to streamline the whole sale process eg Des Coyne (Senior Associate) pre-sale to resolve any title issue or our conveyancing department post-sale to deal with the legal necessities, helps us to build a lasting relationship with our clients rather than a one off transactions approach.

    Wills and Trusts

    If you want to ensure your assets are left to the person or people of your choosing, it is imperative that you make a Will. If there is no Will an application has to be made to the court for the appointment of an Executor which leads to delay and further expense. In some cases if you do not have a Will and your house is over a certain value, your spouse may not even be entitled to your property. Making a Will is simple and relatively inexpensive compared to the cost of not having one.

    Trusts can be set up during your lifetime or in a Will and are not necessarily for people with lots of money. Your Trustees control the assets in the trust and decide when and how they should pass to your chosen beneficiaries. A Trust can be used to preserve assets for future generations or to hold assets on behalf of beneficiaries who have lost capacity. They are also a good way to reduce inheritance tax liability.

    Powers of attorney

    A Power of Attorney can be used to regulate your affairs if you are temporarily or permanently unable to deal with matters. A Continuing Power of Attorney allows a family member or person of your choosing to deal with your financial and property affairs whenever it becomes too much for you and would also continue to be effective if you lost mental capacity. A Welfare Power of Attorney can be granted to deal with your personal welfare. It is worth noting that once you have lost mental capacity it is too late to grant a Power of attorney and a complex and expensive Guardianship application via the courts would be required to have a family member appointed to look after your affairs.

    Property Manager - Charlie Bennett
    I started as trainee Valuer in 1987 and worked until the mid nineties with two of Scotland's most respected estate agencies. I then joined a national housebuilder working as the Marketing Manager for a number of years returning to pure estate agency work in early 2000. Since joining Russel + Aitken I have loved having the ability to deal directly both with vendors and buyers in a much closer way than is possible in the corporate world. 

     In my free time I enjoy returning to Ardnamurchan where I grew up either diving for scallops or fishing upon Loch Shiel. A chance to recharge my batteries in the beautiful isolation and solitude of Scotland's wilderness always helps me to remain calm and collected during the busier periods of work.

    Senior Negotiator - Elaine Wilson
    I've worked with Russel + Aitken since 2003 and joined the Property Team in 2007. I enjoy speaking with clients on a daily basis and enjoy negotiating sales to obtain the best price possible for client's properties. 

     In my spare time I like eating out at nice restaurants and have just discovered the Far East for a holiday destination which I have enjoyed visiting very much.

    Senior Negotiator - Wendy Hartley
    I've worked with Allan Grant/Russel and Aitken since 1992.  That makes it twenty five years on 6th July 2017.    "How time flies when you are enjoying yourself!"    I love meeting people and enjoy negotiating sales. 

    In my spare time I enjoy going to the theatre especially musicals, looking after my grandchildren, our allotment and holidaying in Lanzarote every December.

    Managing Partner - Karen McLachlan 
    I joined Russel + Aitken in 1998, initially for 6 months to assist with conveyancing. Still here after nearly 20 years, I am now Managing Partner directly overseeing the Estate Agency and Conveyancing Departments and having overall responsibility for the day to day operation of the business and strategy implementation. I enjoy what I do. No two days are ever the same and I love interacting with staff and clients to find the best solutions. 

     In my spare time, I love most sports, gardening and indulging in good food and nice wine. I regularly play netball at a local sports centre albeit at a different pace from university days. I have a young son who keeps me busy most weekends. I come to the office on a Monday for a rest!

    Senior Solicitor - Marc Convery
    I qualified as a solicitor in 2013 and joined Russel and Aitken to head up the residential conveyancing team in 2015 following spells in Kirkintilloch during my traineeship and then Dunfermline. This afforded me the opportunity to deal with an array of different types of client, properties and markets and widening my experience in the field. Since coming to Falkirk I have enjoyed the close relationship the firm has with its returning client base and having a greater opportunity to deal with clients in person than at previous firms as well as being part of a strong team of solicitors and support staff that pull together a pool of knowledge in various areas to deliver a quality service tailored to our client's needs. 

     Away from the hustle and bustle of life in the office I like to relax on the golf course in my never ending pursuit of a reasonable handicap. I am also an avid football fan and spend many weekends following my team or watching various games both locally and on television. I also, like most, enjoy jetting off to warmer climates and exploring new cultures and cuisine to recharge my batteries whenever I have the opportunity.

    I have been a Solicitor in private practice specialising in both residential conveyancing and private client work for over thirty years, and have been part of the Russel + Aitken conveyancing team in Alloa since June 2014  having previously worked at Savage Law Practice and Allan Grant, after spells in both Glasgow and Edinburgh. I consider myself to be very much a "people" person, so enjoy the client contact which conveyancing offers, and I strive to make the process of buying or selling a house for clients as least stressful as possible.

    I have worked for Savage Law Practice/Russel +Aitken since 2005 in the Finance Department and I joined the Conveyancing Team in 2015. We understand that it may be a very stressful time in a person's life moving home and we are here to make that easy and less stressful for them.

    I joined Russel + Aitken in 2009 as the Head of the Private Client Department.  I have since moved over to the Commercial Department and although I do still carry out some private client work, I spend most of my time helping out businesses or people creating businesses.  It is very challenging but also very satisfying work.

    In my spare time I enjoy playing the occasional round of golf and spending time with my children.

    Angie Colbecki - Commercial PA
    I started working with Thompsons Solicitors in 1996 as a filing clerk and then was moved up the Finance Department after 6 months. After almost 9 years with Thompsons I left and took on a pub!  I had the Lease on that for 18 months, then returned to the Legal world when I began working for Aikman Russell Dunlop in 2006 .  After 6 years my boss left the partnership and started his own firm, Aikman Bell.  I joined him and stayed until 2015

    I joined Russel + Aitken in September 2015 and began working with Des Coyne in the Commercial department.  We deal with all kinds of commercial work so no 2 days are the same.  It can make life very interesting!

      Property Market Comment

      During our usual Monday morning look at the week ahead, we noted yet again the lack of properties available for sale across the Central Belt generally. It's been an ongoing issue for many months now. It should be great news if you are selling as demand currently outstrips supply which keeps prices strong and in some area rising. However would be sellers are being put off going to market at all due to the lack of properties to buy and so we end up where we are now.... with very little stock!
