Rightmove wins OPP Best Online Platform awardRightmove Overseas has won the ‘Best Online Platform’ category for the second year running in the recent 2009 Overseas Property Professional Industry Awards. In an article on the OPP website, the OPP paid tribute to “next generation players leading by example” and said that “Despite the downturn, the industry’s most pro-active and innovative property companies submitted some exceptional entries for this year’s OPP Industry Awards according to judges.

“Feedback from judges was that the standard was much higher than last year,” said Alex Evans, Group Editorial Director of OPP and chair of the judging panel. “With entries from a broad cross-section of the industry – including agents, developers, introducer networks, media owners, and a variety of associated services – judges remarked that they had a real sense of an industry maturing, innovating and adapting to a new market.”

Judges comments on Rightmove’s winning entry were “A comprehensive and well put together entry that displayed a huge effort to find out more about its visitor traffic, qualify it and help its advertising partners to sell more effectively.”

Rob Wilson, Head of Rightmove Overseas said “I’m hugely proud of our team and the effort they put in to really understand the challenges our advertisers face. We pride ourselves on being flexible and really listening to our customers to figure out solutions that work for them. We all hate resting on our laurels so adapting and working hard to deliver exceptional value when the market is so challenging is second nature to us. Winning this award for the second year running is testament to the work we’ve put in to develop a range of great advertising products and payment options that really help our customers get results in a tough market.”

‘Rightmove Rental’ Scam Warning for people renting in Dubai and overseas

Wednesday, October 21st, 2009

Earlier in the year we highlighted some examples of overseas property scams doing the rounds. In the last few days we’ve heard of fresh attempts to scam renters out of money, by trying to solicit money up front on rental agreements for properties overseas that don’t exist. Typically they are for property in Dubai.

Our advice: if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is, so walk away.

If you are in any way suspicious or concerned about doing business with someone, get independent advice and try to verify their identity and operation before sending any money.

A typical pitch is that a landlord is out of the country or moving back to the UK so can’t meet the tenant directly but has left keys and contracts with an agency in the country and they claim that Rightmove is handling the transaction on their behalf. The prospect is asked to forward the funds in advance and then the keys will be released to them.

Here’s some example emails we’ve seen sent to people:

Good day.

Concerning my rental offer, I would like to provide you with the following information: the apartment has one living room, 1 bedroom, one bathroom and one kitchen, with an approximate surface of square feet 850. We will both agree at the begining of the contract about it’s duration. The ideal profile of the tenant I am searching for is a responsible and dynamic person. The amount due as rent will be of AED4580 and includes all utilities such as water, electricity, internet, cable, parking etc. Pets are allowed. My reason for renting this property is due to a work related relocation, to Newcastle, United Kingdom. Due to this relocation, I have delegated a specialized company (Rightmove.co.uk) to deal with renting my property. They have full power to make the deal and turn over the keys to the property. They are also authorized to handle the payment and delivery for us. If this is of interest to you, please contact me as soon as possible to manage all the rest of the details.

While waiting for your response, please receive my highest consideration,

Omran Quasen Al-Rshaidat.

Hello ,

Following our first contact on this matter, if you are still interested to close the deal, the next step will be contacting the company rightmove.co.uk and provide them all the necessary information about the customer, namely you, so they can start the process right away.
You will have to provide me with your full name and address (as you provided the name, only the address is needed). Due to my hasty relocation, the matter is somewhat urgent. If you give me a positive feedback, the rental department will contact you with the temporary agreement and with all the instructions to secure the place.
Rightmove.co.uk is authorized to handle all the payment operations; therefore, you will receive instructions to deposit the money (AED4580) into the account of a rightmove.co.uk Agent from United Kingdom.
The company will hold the money until you have a chance to visit and assess the property. This procedure creates a buyer protection policy. At all times during this period, the money will remain in possession of the company, so that you will be able to repossess it if the property does not suit your needs.
Right after the funds have been deposited into their account, they will immediately start the next step of the deal (the agent will arrive at your address with the contract and keys).
After the deposit of the funds into their account, the maximum delay until delivery of the contract and keys is of 48 h. You will benefit from a ten days inspection period from the day you receive the keys and contract at home. If after this ten days inspection period you decide to hold the apartment, then you will have to authorize rightmove.co.uk to release the funds to me, and the transaction will be completed. On the contrary, if you will not be satisfied with the apartment, you will be able to send the keys and contract back through the same service and ask rightmove.co.uk to return the funds to you. Your money will be refunded to you on the same day you send back the keys and the contract.
This procedure insures a degree of certainty for both parties. For me, since I’m in Newcastle and I will have to fly in to close the deal, I need to know that I am dealing with a person with serious intentions, and for you, in case you will not be satisfied with the property, you can get your money back. Taking into account all of the above, if you wish to proceed with renting the apartment, please provide me your full name and address so I can initiate the deal through rightmove.co.uk right away.

        Best regards,
    Omran Quasen Al-Rshaidat.

The prospect is often sent official looking emails with lots of mentions of Rightmove as agents for the transaction but requires payment via Moneygram.

The facts are that the Rightmove does not have such a department and never asks for any money up front from tenants against rentals or sales. We only advertise properties for owners, developers and agents we do not get involved directly in transactions for sale or rent.

We’ve had calls from (rightly) suspicious prospective tenants asking us to confirm the contracts are real or to verify emails they’ve received are genuine. Genuine emails from Rightmove staff will only come email addresses ending @rightmove.co.uk.

We’ve compiled a list of names and email addresses associated with the improper use of our name:

  • Katrin Muper

  • Vincent Carter Duthie
  • Quillan Ulrick Ellard
  • q.omran30@hotmail.com

Florida property owners could enjoy trick or treating this Halloween

Tuesday, October 13th, 2009
Those who own Florida property could be interested to learn about the Halloween celebrations due to be held in the state over the next few weeks.

Writing for Visit Florida, Jill Martin said that in the state, the spooky celebration "is so much more" than a night of going trick or treating and detailed a number of events which those with Florida property may want to check out.

"So whether you’re looking to have a not-so-scary time with Mickey, an autumn celebration with Shamu the killer whale, you’ll find it here," the site said.

Families could head to Disney’s Magic Kingdom for the "Not So Scary Halloween Party", set to be hosted by Mickey Mouse himself.

Those who attend the event - which is due to be held on a number of evenings from now until November 1st - can also take advantage of much smaller queues for the rides.

Florida is also home to parks such as Epcot and Animal Kingdom, which could be great places for those with Florida property to spend the spookiest holiday of the year.

House report could see Brits scoop Spanish property bargains

Tuesday, October 13th, 2009
Falling house prices in Spain could prove to be interesting for those Brits looking to invest in Spanish property.

According to a new report released by Valencian real estate firm Jimenez de Laiglesia, prices of Spanish property could have been overvalued by as much as 37 per cent at the peak of the housing boom in 2007, reported Kyero.com.

Spanish property prices have fallen by around 15 per cent since this point, the company said, which could see Brits searching for a home in the country able to get their hands on a bargain, the source reported.

As well as this, the report flagged up the potential positives which could come as a result of the economic downturn.

Housing affordability in the country has risen, with the level of household income people need to spend on buying a home falling from 51 per cent in 2008 to 31 per cent this year.

Property prices in the country have been falling steadily in recent months, but figures from the National Institute of Statistics recently showed that the decline may be slowing.

European visitors could head to Spanish property

Tuesday, October 13th, 2009
Europe has always been a popular tourist destination with British travellers, but those planning on heading to the continent could find that certain times of the year are better than others.

Such a trip could see Brits staying in French property, or property in Italy, with both countries traditionally popular with UK holidaymakers.

According to executive director at AITO Kate Kenward, people may find that taking a trip to Europe at a quieter time of year could make visiting cities and other attractions "a joy".

Taking a trip at a time when fewer tourists are choosing to travel could give Brits the chance to enjoy areas in Europe more and could also see them able to choose from a wider range of Spanish property or French property.

Figures from the Thomson and First Choice Trends Report showed that 80 per cent of Brits said they plan to go on holiday in 2010, despite the ongoing impact of the financial downturn.

A ‘leisurely pace’ awaits Florida property

Monday, October 12th, 2009
Florida property is about to experience a more leisurely pace of life, the region’s tourism organisation has noted.

Visit Florida explains that, in the autumn months, Florida’s beaches begin to empty and can, at times, seem like they are for the sole use of those who remain.

These pseudo-private beaches allow those who reside in Florida property to share their autumn days with only the wind.

"A cool breeze blows off the Gulf, gently creating new patterns in the sugar white sand," Visit Florida adds.

However, this does not mean there is nothing to do in the state, with food festivals and the chance for fishing fanatics to hunt that one big catch.

Florida also boasts some pet-friendly resorts, such as the southern tip of Honeymoon Island State Park.

Here, dogs can walk on the sand as long as they are on a lead - but are allowed to run free to let them enjoy the crashing waves.

French property leads to underwater worlds

Monday, October 12th, 2009
A whole new world awaits those who stay in French property, as the French Government Tourist Office notes the existence of underwater theme parks.

These aquariums are located in towns from France’s historic ports through to the more tourist-focused seaside resorts.

Along with "ocean discovery centres" dedicated to housing and displaying sealife, the organisation adds that water parks offer a different kind of water-based entertainment.

Meanwhile, holidaymakers stepping out of French property in Saint-Nazaire can visit Escal’Atlantic.

This is housed in a former World War II submarine base and is now home to a celebration of magnificent ocean liners from days gone by.

For those who want to view sealife, however, the Aquarium du Perigord Noir in Le Bugue could be the ideal destination.

With 6,000 fish and three million litres of water on-site - as well as lizards, snakes and terrapins - the aquarium is home to Europe’s largest privately owned collection of fish.

Rugby star praises stay in Italy property

Friday, October 9th, 2009
Former England rugby union captain Lawrence Dallagio has spoken of his love of the Italy holiday destination of Lake Como, calling it a "magical setting".

The country as a whole has special significance for the player, as his father is Italian - but also, he and his wife were married by the lake which Dallagio noted makes the destination even more important to him.

Mr Dallagio praised the standard of Italy property around the lake and also suggested that for Brits visiting the area around Lake Como for the first time, hiring a car and exploring the "lovely little towns" in the region could be ideal.

And foodies planning a trip to an Italy property on Lake Como could be "spoilt for choice" over the range of cuisine on offer, said the rugby star.

Lake Como is known for attracting the rich and famous to its shores, with Hollywood star George Clooney owning an Italy property in the area.

Holiday to Spanish property ‘can still be affordable’

Friday, October 9th, 2009
Holidaymakers heading to Madrid in Spain could find that despite the weak pound and strong euro, they can have a great holiday without breaking the bank.

Writing for the Telegraph, travel writer Fred Mawer said that the "lively" Spanish capital can be an affordable place to holiday.

Those who regularly jet off to Europe for a holiday in Spanish property could find that buying a home overseas is the ideal move to ensure they can visit the country whenever they like.

Mr Mawer noted that Brits holidaying in Spain could take steps to make the price of their break less, such as taking advantage of lunchtime offers in restaurants and visiting low-cost tapas bars in the evening.

As well as this, art fans taking a break in a Spanish property could be interested to learn that two of Madrid’s best galleries, the Prado and the Reina Sofia, are free to visit at certain times of the day.

Overseas mortgage firm Conti recently revealed that interest in properties in Europe is on the up among Brits, who may have been tempted to invest after an enjoyable holiday.
