Brittany property buyers to get new magazine

Tuesday, April 28th, 2009
A new magazine is to be launched aimed at British ex-pats living in France, which will include Brittany property buyers.

Called the French Post, the publication is the brainchild of Nicki Wade - the former head of women’s magazines at Emap - and will have former Independent on Sunday news editor Michael Streeter as its editor.

Speaking to the Press Gazette, Ms Wade said the purpose of the paper would be to help expat Britons integrate, commenting: "We have ambitious aims for the French Post to become a feature of French life itself."

This would include covering current affairs in the country and having French contributors.

Such a publication could be of interest to those thinking of buying Brittany property as it may help them to settle into life in France.

Last month director of the Brittany tourist board Michael Dodds commented that the arrival of more Britons in the inland parts of the region has been a "driving force" in attracting extra tourists to such areas.

Brittany boost as expert hails short-haul trips?

Monday, April 20th, 2009
Britons are tending to opt for shorter-haul holidays as the credit crunch continues to bite, new research has suggested, something that could have implications for Brittany property.

The head of product marketing at online travel firm Expedia.co.uk, Jonathan Cudworth, said: "The most recent data saw seven of the ten destinations featured [in the Expedia.co.uk travel hotspots barometer] were less than a three hour flight away from the UK."

He stated that with plenty of cheap options available, the high cost of the euro would not put people off.

Such comments may interest those thinking of investing in tourist rental property in locations closest to the UK, such as Brittany.

Brittany property can offer some cheap getaways for Britons looking to take a holiday on a low budget, the Daily Telegraph reported earlier this month.

It noted that Brittany Ferries has entered this market with deals that include sailings from Plymouth to Roscoff in the price.

Brittany property hailed as cheap tourism option

Tuesday, April 14th, 2009
Taking a holiday in a rented Brittany property could be a good way to save money, it has been suggested.

In a feature on how to get away for less during the credit crunch, the Daily Telegraph said this was one of the options for people keen to go overseas without doing so on a large budget.

The paper gave the example of a detached house with wooden beams and stonework, in the village of Ploerdut near Morbihan, for which Brittany Ferries has secured a deal at £178 per person per week, including a ferry crossing from Plymouth to Roscoff.

Investors in Brittany property may wish to capitalise on the budget market by offering competitively priced rental accommodation.

UK tourism in Brittany is being expanded by Britons investing there, it has been noted.

Director of the Brittany Tourist Board Michael Dodds commented that "a few thousand" UK buyers have settled in the inland parts of the region, away from the coastal tourist hotspots.

He said they have been "a driving force" in encouraging more British tourists to visit the area’s forests and waterways.

Brittany property buyers boosting tourism, says expert

Thursday, March 19th, 2009
Tourism is growing in parts of Brittany away from the sea thanks to the increasing presence of UK buyers there, the region’s tourist board has said.

Director of the body Michael Dodds commented that "a few thousand British people have settled in inland Brittany".

He added that such buyers are "a driving force in helping people appreciate the inland waterways within Brittany and the undiscovered forests in the centre".

These Brittany property buyers are adding to the appeal already seen in popular locations such as Saint-Malo and "historic" Dinan, he noted, expressing the hope that the attraction of these areas will grow.

Mr Dodds suggested that the recession will see many people choose France as a "safe" destination for a summer holiday, with Brittany benefiting from its close proximity to Britain.

Earlier this week Briton Tracy Harris, who left London for the village of Evran in the north-east of the region, said life in Brittany is "simpler, safer and calmer", the Daily Mail reported.

Brittany property buyers not deterred by low pound

Tuesday, March 17th, 2009
A British couple who chose to buy a Brittany property and move there from London have said the fall in the value of the pound has not prevented their change of lifestyle being a successful one.

Tracy Harris and Frank Maximillian told the Daily Mail that "life is simpler, safer and calmer" in Brittany, where the couple now reside in the village of Evran after selling their house in Putney.

Ms Harris stated that despite the depreciation of sterling, the couple are not worse off.

Examples of cheaper living costs noted by the news provider include local government taxation being up to 90 per cent less than council tax while including the cost of a television licence, in addition to which there is no road tax.

Such considerations may be of interest to those thinking of buying a Brittany property.

Brittany property has also been recommended as a good prospect for holiday lettings.

Managing director of investor portal BuyAbroad.com John Reilly commented recently: "In places like Brittany and down towards the south coast, you are always going to get good rental in the summer."

Brittany property offers ’strong rental opportunities’

Tuesday, March 3rd, 2009
Brittany property holders should be able to secure good rental returns during the summer season, one expert has said.

According to John Reilly, managing director at BuyAbroad.com, the Brittany property market and areas such as the south coast offer strong rental opportunities.

"In the holiday-type destinations there is always a steady flow of rental potential from one year to the next," he remarked.

Mr Reilly stated that those who can purchase French property in "the right location" and can guarantee it will be rented out can still find a "good buy" as the market in the country is a stable area of investment.

Furthermore, he noted that while house prices have dropped in most locations in France, homes in the right areas are "still holding their money".

Meanwhile, a survey based on Google searches by Write About Property last month revealed that France is the most searched for country for foreign property.

Pink Coast may interest Brittany property buyers

Monday, March 2nd, 2009
The pink granite coast of northern Brittany has been hailed as an outstanding place in which to take a holiday.

Tour firm Keycamp, which is offering deals at Perros Guirec on the coast, has described the vicinity as "ideal" for an Easter break, with plenty of festivities and chocolate to be enjoyed.

It also said the area is "wonderfully located for cycling and walking adventures and exploring the region’s numerous beaches".

Such attractions may entice some to take a holiday in the area, while others could go further and buy a Brittany property.

Interest in Brittany property may have been stimulated last week through the TV programme Grand Designs.

It featured a modern home that was developed out of recycled tyres and other materials.

Those enjoying the coast of Brittany may also consider Binic, a fishing village that holds a festival dedicated to the industry each May.

Fishy time for Brittany property seekers

Thursday, February 26th, 2009
La Fete de la Morue is a festival dedicated to the Brittany fishing industry and is held every May.

Those seeking to buy Brittany property can indulge in a variety of fishy dishes and discover more about the local industry in the town of Binic, a port on the Brittany coast.

As well as experiencing the event itself, the occasion may provide guidance for Brittany property investors into the type of cuisine they may enjoy on a more regular basis if they should acquire a home in the area.

Seafood specialties in the region include seafood platters, which incorporate items such as langoustines, rock or spider crabs, oysters, whelks, mussels and queen scallops, the Brittany Tourist board notes.

Brittany hosts a number of other events featuring culture and food, including the Roscoff pink onion festival, which is held in the summer.

Canary Islands property may get airline bargain boost

Monday, February 23rd, 2009
A low cost airline has announced a sale of cheap airfares to all its destinations, something that could boost the Canary Islands property scene.

The new sale of flights by Monarch Airlines has seen it trim 20 per cent off flights to all the locations it serves, provided they are bought by February 24th.

Places to which the budget operator flies include the Canary Islands of Lanzarote and Tenerife.

Such a move by the airline may help encourage more people to fly to these locations, which in turn could bolster the Canary Islands property scene by introducing more people to its attractions.

Another good reason for some to head to the Canary Islands now is its year-round golf facilities, Hotel Seoul Korea has suggested.

It has described Gran Canaria as a "fantastic winter golf destination" with five courses, while Tenerife offers six different venues.

Laying down the law on Brittany property

Friday, February 20th, 2009
The patron saint of lawyers has his life and times remembered in one of Brittany’s annual festivals, which takes place in the town of Treguier every May.

Le Pardon de Saint Yves sees a large procession marching through the streets of the town, with pilgrims from the legal profession and courts getting dressed up for the occasion and a large mass held at the end.

The parade marks a tradition going back centuries and may offer an interesting insight into Breton life and culture for those keen on buying Brittany property and possibly living in the area.

Visitors to Treguier may also find a number of other attractions to interest them throughout the year, such as the cathedral with its towering spire and the statue of the philosopher Ernest Renan, a native of the town.

Treguier lies close to the channel coast of Brittany.
