Normandy property set for faster ferry access

Thursday, April 23rd, 2009
A new high-speed cross-channel ferry service designed to rival budget air services has been unveiled.

In a move that may interest Normandy property investors and others looking to buy in the north of France, LD Lines has announced the launch of a 112-metre catamaran ferry that will carry freight, cars and foot passengers faster than any ferry that has yet crossed the Dover straits.

Spokesperson for the firm Nick Stevens said fares will be competitive with low-cost airlines and the lack of airport procedures will mean journey times are shorter with the new faster ships.

"Travelling by car, by ferry and now particularly by fast ferry, provide the traveller with so many unique advantages," he stated.

While LD’s new service will run from Dover to Bolougne from late May, the operator already runs other services to the Normandy ports of Dieppe and Le Havre.

Run free with Normandy property

Friday, April 17th, 2009
Normandy will stage a series of races in early June for everybody from fun runners to serious racers as a way of commemorating the fallen in the D-day campaign of 1944.

The events, which will be held around Caen, include a marathon to be staged on June 14th, which passes close to key battle sites, as well as a 10k, the Pegasus bridge fun run, a skating race, a children’s run and a race for women dressed in pink in aid of breast cancer research.

Normandy property seekers may enjoy the events of the day and ponder the history as a means of learning more about the region’s past and its present.

Those considering Normandy property investment with an eye on the future could do so with a sporting event on four legs in mind.

Normandy was recently awarded host status for the 2014 World Equestrian Games.

Normandy property in potential rate cut gain

Friday, April 3rd, 2009
The European Central Bank (ECB) has announced a new cut in interest rates, something that could help lower the cost of mortgages on Normandy property.

In its monthly meeting, the board of governors agreed to trim the rate by 0.25 per cent with effect from April 8th, taking the main refinancing operations rate to 1.25 per cent.

The decision comes amid further recent evidence of lower inflationary pressures and deepening recession in the eurozone.

Normandy property investors may find that this rate move makes cheaper mortgages available, lowering the potential cost of buying a home in the region.

Those who do buy in Normandy will be able to look forward to an equine extravaganza in 2014, as the region was awarded the status of host for the World Equestrian Games this week.

Such an event may help attract horse lovers to the area and provide income for those renting out holiday property during the event.

France ‘to reform property market cautiously’

Friday, September 26th, 2008
The French government has signalled that it is planning to reform its property market in a way that will avoid it matching the kind of problems seen elsewhere in the credit crunch.

French president Nicolas Sarkozy has pledged reforms to make the French a nation of property owners but finance minister Christine Lagarde told the BBC that this would not mean a similar situation to Britain when it comes to buying and lending.

She commented: "Expect two conditions - a down payment of 20 per cent of the value of the house plus mortgage [repayments] which will not exceed 30 per cent of income."

Ms Lagarde added that there will be no US-style sub-prime lending.

Such considerations may interest those thinking of investing in the Brittany property market, the French Riviera property market or the Normandy property market.

The price people are paying for a residential property in France right now is about the correct one that the market should be charging, French property specialist firm VEF has stated this week.

Normandy offering ‘competitive’ property

Tuesday, September 16th, 2008
Those seeking property in rural parts of Normandy can get it at a "competitive" price, it has been stated.

Overseas property portal nubricks.com reported that the region is a popular one with British buyers, offering fine cuisine and scenery but particularly favoured because of its easy transport links to and from the UK via boat or train.

It stated that bargains available included a cottage in Calvados for €45,000 (£35,700) and a stone longhouse with possible land and outhouses for €150,000.

Those looking to buy Normandy property or invest elsewhere in France are adopting novel strategies, French specialist firm VEF has stated.

It said a common solution to the inability to sell a UK home to finance such a purchase is to take advantage of the currently strong UK rental market and let it out, with the money paying the mortgage on the French property until the British market improves and the UK property can then be sold at a higher price.

Hope for tunnel to reopen swiftly

Friday, September 12th, 2008
Eurotunnel has said it is hoping to be able to reopen the Channel Tunnel within a few days following a fire yesterday in a truck that caused it to be closed.

The situation has led to disruption as trains on either side of the channel were cancelled and road passengers were unable to make the crossing.

While the operator has now confirmed that the tunnel will remain closed today, it remains hopeful that there will be services this weekend.

Such a quick restoration of service would be a contrast to the last fire incident in 1996, when the service was suspended for two weeks.

This could be considered good news by those investing in Normandy property, as the availability of the transport link between the UK and the region is one attraction of living in the area for many, making it possible to live in the region and commute to work in London.

Yesterday’s fire is believed to have started in a truck carrying the pharmaceutical substance phenol.

Phenol is used in operations to remove ingrowing toenails by burning out the nail’s roots.
