Florida airports win awards

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008
In news that many interest those thinking of investing in Orlando property and Florida property, two airports in the state have scooped awards in a poll.

A survey of business travellers by Conde Nast magazine found that Tampa was the second best airport overall in the whole of the US, with only Oregon in front.

Orlando came in fifth.

Tampa came top of the poll among US airports for ease of connection and comfort.

These high rankings may also mean that those travelling to Florida as tourists are more likely to come back due to the quality of facilities they encounter when they are arriving or leaving.

Such a trend may help boost tourism and thus help investment in rental holiday property.

In the case of Orlando, it is the second time this week a facility used by tourists has been recognised.

The Renaissance Orlando resort at Seaworld has won the Media and Conventions Magazine Gold Key award, Marriott revealed via PR-web this week.

Douro Valley ‘new Portuguese alternative’

Monday, September 29th, 2008
Those interested in buying in the Portugal property market can find a cheaper alternative in the north of the country, it has been stated.

Investors keen on Porto and the Douro valley will be able to find an emerging market which offers more than just the famous Port wine, the Financial Times reports.

Paul Symington, of Port wine producer Symingtons, told the paper there are many property bargains available in the picturesque Douro valley, stating: "The government is keen to encourage people to renovate houses in the old mountain villages such as Alijo and many inland vineyards are being depopulated, so there are opportunities if you are prepared to be pioneering."

Mr Symington also noted that the Douro valley and the city of Porto are now better connected, with direct flights from the UK, a new underground rail system in Porto itself and a forthcoming high-speed rail link that will enable travellers to get down to Lisbon in 90 minutes.

Another place in Portugal tipped to do well is Tavira on the eastern Algarve.

Those looking to buy into Algarve property should look there because apartments can start at around £136,000 and it is less busy than the central Algarve, Mary Mangan of estate agency Winksworth told the Daily Telegraph last week.

Costa Blanca gears up for yacht race

Thursday, September 25th, 2008
The Costa Blanca is gearing up for one of the biggest events on the yachting calendar as Alicante prepares for the start of the Volvo Ocean Race.

Although the round-the-world event does not start until October 11th, the atmosphere is already bubbling up as competitors and fans are able to mingle freely at the race village in the city, the events website notes.

Last weekend 11,000 people visited the village and over a million are expected to come before the race starts, according to the head of the Alicante organising committee Nicolas Figueras.

Such an event may help enhance Alicante’s status as a sailing centre, attracting more tourists and in turn potentially providing more custom for rental holiday homes that Costa Blanca property investors have bought.

The lead up to the race is officially due to start today when the daughters of Spain’s King Juan Carlos launch two yachts at the port, La Manga Spain reports.

Alpine resorts ’still growing’

Thursday, September 4th, 2008
Property in French Alpine resorts is continuing to grow in value, it has been reported.

Ascendant Property has told Property Wire that new figures show that resale apartment prices in the first quarter of 2008 in the Haute-Savoie region were up over three per cent and in Annency the rise was 2.5 per cent.

It also noted that in top resorts prices had soared, with rises of 13.8 per cent in Le Grand Bornand, nearly 10.9 per cent at Morzine, 8.9 per cent in Chamonix and 7.5 per cent in Megeve.

The website stated that the reasons these prices have risen are that the banks have protected the property market from any boom and bust situation by stricter lending criteria and larger deposits, while there is a shortage of supply in Alpine property.

Another factor that may bolster France’s property industry, including the tourism sector, is the transport improvement that will come with the expansion of its high-speed TGV train system.

France’s government has announced plans to more than double the size of the current network by 2020.
