Overview & Gallery
Cerrinho Heights is approximately 45kms from Faro International Airport, situated in the middle of the Algarve 'Fertile Triangle' of Silves, Sao Bartolomeu de Messines, and Armacao de Pera. So called because of the surrounding orange groves, fig trees, almond trees, olives and carob. To the North lay the mountains of Monchique and to the south the Ocean and beaches. The development has uninterrupted views across the countryside to the ocean and sits in a tranquil environment with mainly agricultural development. It is however easy to get anywhere within the Algarve and only 35 minutes from faro Airport.

    The Algarve for families
    image cannot be displayed

With its mild year-round climate, it's easy to see why the Algarve is the obvious choice for a fun-filled holiday for the whole family. But those fun days are not limited to sunbathing and swimming in the sea and the sports you can do on the Algarve coast. There are many other things to do with the children.

For families looking for the more natural side of the Algarve, there's a huge variety of excursions to enjoy throughout the region, including a number of companies that offer boat trips to see the dolphins from Lagos, Portimão and Alvor. You can also choose to take a short boat trip to the islands around Faro and see the flora and fauna of the Ria Formosa Natural Park. Or go on a jeep safari or take a canoe out on the river , where there's much to explore and lots of adventures to be had.

But you don't need to go to sea to see dolphins in the Algarve. In Guia, near Albufeira, the Zoomarine is an oceanographic park with great educational entertainment, where there's a unique opportunity to see dolphins, seals, sharks, turtles, exotic birds and waterfowl, alligators, tropical fish, as well as to have fun in several pools and water attractions, and also see some educational animal shows.

Repeatedly considered to be the best golfing destination in the world by magazines devoted to the sport and by international associations of specialist tour operators, the Algarve lives up to this distinction by maintaining an unrelenting quality.

With an ideal climate that lets you play throughout the year and a wide variety of almost four dozen courses, the region is a golfers' paradise. Most courses are located in protected areas, with stunning views. They are internationally recognised for the quality of their facilities, and they have been designed by prestigious players and legendary champions such as Sir Henry Cotton, Rocky Roquemore, Arnold Palmer and Ronald Fream.

The courses are spread from one extreme of the region to the other. By the beach or further inland, flat or hilly, the choice is varied, but any of them can offer you the chance of birdies and eagles, and maybe even a hole in one. Between Lagos, Sagres and Serra de Monchique there are courses with varying degrees of difficulty, where the greens and fairways are framed by beautiful natural scenery. It is in this area, near Portimão, that the first course opened in Algarve is to be found, Penina Hotel & Golf Resort, which has been awarded on several occasions as one of the best in Europe.

The most central area, between Vilamoura, Quinta do Lago and Vale do Lobo is one of the most luxurious in the Algarve and also one of the best equipped for playing golf. These courses combine links and fairways with cliffs, lakes and bunkers, providing a high standard of holes. Take, for example, hole 16 at the Royal Golf Course in Vale de Lobo, the most photographed in Europe: a demanding Par 3 in which three spectacular sea cliffs stand between the tee and the green. Or hole 6 at Pine Cliffs, that is on the edge of a ravine and requires a shot over the beach.

In Sotavento , the courses are more level, but their imaginative designs provide challenges that require the use of various clubs. Many are peppered with the indigenous species of the region, such as fig, olive, carob and oak trees, so a round of golf is like taking a walk in nature. Additionally, the panoramic views over the River Guadiana, the Atlantic, the mountains and the Ria Formosa Natural Park are so beautiful that the golfers' concentration can be broken, jeopardising their tee shots.

True tests to the technical capabilities of even the most accomplished players, who have to put their strategies to the test, many of these courses are host to important international tournaments , such as the Algarve World Cup or the Cup of Nations. The Portugal Masters is part of the PGA European Tour and has been held at the Oceânico Victoria in Vilamoura since 2007.

But the Algarve is also for beginners. There is a wide range of Golf Academies with an international reputation spread across the region, where you can take your first steps or improve your golf technique. They are provided with sophisticated equipment, use innovative teaching methods and are supported by pros certified by the Professional Golfers Association (PGA) who are competent in several languages. Most courses also offer training programs, and for those who want to practice their short game on their own, there are practice areas and several pitch and put courses spread across the region. A wide choice for golfers of all levels!

    Food from the Sea

The very freshest fish and seafood come from the sea, and are the main ingredients in the Algarve cuisine. They are joined by vegetables and fruits whose flavours the sun has made sublime, and their combination provide the elements for a dining experience that you will never forget.

Start with what the ocean provides. Seafood : clams, oysters, donax clams and cockles cooked on a griddle or in a frying pan are delicious. Some plain barnacles on a beach on the Vicentina coast, razor clam rice, whelk bean stew, clam xerém (stew with maize meal) and seafood açorda (bread casserole) are other examples to make the mouth water. One much sought-after recipe is for clams in a cataplana , a traditional dish whose secret is in using this clam-shaped copper pan of Arab origin, which retains all the flavour and aroma of the food cooked in it. To stimulate the palate, there's nothing better than a pinch of salt from the region, especially the "cream" of the salt - salt flower. In addition to the many restaurants where you can taste these specialties in the summer, there are seafood festivals in Olhão and Faro, near Ria Formosa, where it is most abundant.

But any fresh fish , slowly grilled to perfection over charcoal, the way the fishermen do it, can be a veritable food of the gods. There are other dishes such as carapaus alimados (skinned horse mackerel) and grilled sardines that you can eat everywhere but which have a special reputation in Portimão. They're delicious dripping on bread or accompanied with a montanheira salad, made with tomato and oregano to add that special taste. From tuna steak or on a skewer in Tavira, to octopus , which in Santa Luzia is cooked in various ways - stewed in wine, breaded, grilled, with rice or simply baked in the oven - as well as the delicious squid and cuttlefish, the Algarve is the expert in these menus.

    Vilamoura Marina
    image cannot be displayed

Modern, lively and sophisticated, Vilamoura has developed around its marina, and is today one of the largest leisure resorts in Europe.

The town is built around a tourist resort begun in the 1970s. But the Romans already knew the area, as is clear from the ruins of Cerro da Vila , preserved in the museum of the same name, beside the access road to Falésia Beach.

The marina , the largest in the country with 1300 berths, is the main hub of entertainment, not only for those who arrive by boat, but for everyone spending a holiday in the area and who come here in the late afternoon or evening to enjoy an ice cream or dinner. It's also the right place for shopping, with a wide range from local craft stores to the most prestigious international brands. As for the nightlife, there are many bars and clubs with the best DJs and the Vilamoura Casino promises to really get the adrenaline running.

There are countless activities to do during the day. Tennis, horse riding, sailing, windsurfing, jet skiing, parasailing, boat trips, fishing, the range is so huge you'll be spoilt for choice. The warm waters and golden sands are a stone's throw away. From the pontoon east from the Marina, the sands of Vilamoura Beach extend to Quarteira; and to the west is Falésia Beach , which stretches for miles, only finishing at Olhos de Água, so there's plenty of space to lay out your towel and sunbathe on the beach. Safety conditions are the best, and there are many amusements for a few perfect days at the seaside.
