Is it easy for you to make friends?
As Spanish Property Choice are a family run business who have been through the whole process of moving their family from the UK, we understand it may take a little while before you feel at home, however, there are a few things you may want to do to help the process:
Introduce yourself and your family to your neighbours. Don't worry about the fact that you don't speak Spanish (if that is the case) - just a simple gesture will be appreciated, the local Spanish in Costa Almeria are very welcoming and really appreciate you trying your best to communicate with them, you will never be short of a bag of oranges or lemons if you do.
Why not host a housewarming party and get the BBQ going. You don't know anybody.... Well, now's your chance. A few bottles of Spanish wine will work wonders and the locals are always ready for a fiesta!
There are always local newspapers for you to get your hands on, most are free of charge, one of the finest in this region is the Euro Weekly Costa Almeria. That way you may well find out about local events that you can participate in.
There are many local clubs to get involved with including golf societies, gardening clubs, travel societies, and fundraising and charitable events which will enhance new friendships. One place not to miss is Amigos bowling centre for great food and company.
Shop locally and don't be frightened to get into conversation with as many people as your can. Learn a few Spanish words such as 'hello' (Hola) and you'll be well on your way.
Although you may want to submerge yourself in the local culture, you may also want to consider joining an expat society. It can be quite comforting to hear your own language from time to time... Like so many things in life, it may all seem very daunting at first. Spain is a country with a traditional culture and different ways.
The key is to embrace these cultural differences, not fight them. Some of the bureaucracy and formality you may find annoying, but perhaps it was this slower pace that enchanted you about Spain in the first place, relax... and we guarantee it will soon feel like home to you.
YOU ARE NEVER TOO OLD TO MAKE FRIENDS
