Benitachell is a tranquil and pretty village and there is evidence of settlement dating from 20,000 BC. Its borders extend to the stunning coastline, formed by a succession of cliffs of more than 100m high. Benitachell is hugely popular with people from many lands who have fallen in love with this friendly Spanish village, at the heart of which are narrow cobbled streets, colourful houses and stunning mountain and sea views.
In the first millennium, the region was ruled from Rome and, from 8th to 13th century, it was colonized by the Moors. They certainly left their mark on the culture of the area, bringing with them agricultural knowledge, along with fruit, nut and olive trees, creating the rich agricultural economy which still remains to this day. The attractive stone terraces, which can be seen on nearly every hillside, were their work. In the 13th century, the Moors were expelled by Jaime I, when people from Catalunya and Aragón settled here, bringing the Valencian language with them. In the 16th century, the coastal villages came under attack from the Berber pirates and look-out towers were erected along the length of the coast, as people retreated inland.
In more recent centuries, the development of modern rail and air travel has attracted people from across the world, creating the vibrant tourist industry which continues today. But, even now the pace of life in the old village is timeless, people still choose to fetch water from the local natural springs, gather for a chat in the market or one of the quite plazas and meet up for tapas at one of the friendly village bars.
There are several urbanisations which surround the old town, the largest of which is on The Cumbre del Sol, (The Summit of the Sun) where the views in all directions are spectacular. On a clear day, it is possible to see the Balearic islands. The facilities are excellent, with modern supermarkets, banks, and its own little beach, having crystal clear sea water - perfect for scuba-diving. There is also a secluded cove, accessed by boat.
Benitachell has its fair share of fiestas, with parades, music, dancing in the streets and spectacular firework displays. On 5th of January, is the Procession of the Three Kings, when presents are given in the main square to all of the children in the village. At Easter, there is a sombre procession of people dressed in black holding candles, following the cross through the streets of the village.
The second week of July brings the traditional Moors and Christians Fiesta, celebrated throughout Spain, with elaborate costumes and mock battles through the streets, culminating with the expulsion of the Moors. There is live music, dancing in the streets, banquets to digest and yet more fireworks. Everyone parties until dawn almost every night of this week so don’t expect to get much sleep!
