The Property
North Wing is part of Dukes House, a magnificent Grade II Listed manor house situated in idyllic parkland. The fairytale appearance of North Wing captures the imagination on first view, with gorgeous stonework, a circular turret and castellated bay window. The property was built in 1873 by Frank Caws for the Backhouse family of Quaker bankers. Originally Dukes House was used by the Backhouses as their country retreat but the property was extended around 1920 to create an imposing mansion, subsequently divided into three family homes circa 1980. Architectural historian Nikolaus Pevsner described Dukes House as a "country retreat in the Romantic-Gothic style". North Wing offers a charming home which is in need of updating with the chance to put a personal stamp on an historic property.

Everyday access is via a door to the central hall with access to the living accommodation, a ground floor bedroom, WC and staircase to the upper floor. The sitting room is to the front elevation and has a dual aspect including the fabulous bay window. The high ceiling with decorative coving and cornicing is a reflection of the history of North Wing. Across the hall is the drawing room, a second spacious reception room with an imposing stone inglenook to one side. Adjoining the drawing room is the kitchen with traditional tiled flooring and wood cabinetry. The kitchen is served by an adjacent utility room with external access. Also on the ground floor is a generous double bedroom.

The main stairs rise from the hall to the first floor, but there is also a wonderful alternative; an elegant door opens at external ground level into the fabulous turret. A spiral staircase climbs to the first floor before leading into the front bedroom of the property. The unusual ceiling in this bedroom is defined by the amazing steeply sloped roof top of North Wing. There are two further bedrooms on this floor, including one with a bay window framing elevated views. The bedrooms are served by a bathroom and a separate shower room.

Externally
North Wing is approached via a long, tree-lined driveway leading through Dukeshouse Wood to a gravel area in front of the property providing ample parking. The generous gardens are to the west of the house and driveway and feature lawn dotted with mature shrubs, along with tall mature trees of many species. To the side of the property there is a flagged patio area, ideal to relax in the idyllic surroundings.

Local Information
The property is ideally placed for all the day-to-day amenities offered by the bustling market town of Hexham. Besides a number of well-known supermarkets the town boasts several independent specialist shops such as a delicatessen, butcher, greengrocer, bookshop and bi-monthly farmers' market. Hexham also has a good selection of schools, professional services and medical/hospital facilities whilst leisure opportunities range from a sports centre with an indoor pool to a cinema and theatre/arts centre.

The historic Hexham Abbey, one of the oldest churches in England, is at the heart of the town whilst the beautiful surrounding area provides innumerable opportunities for walking, cycling, riding and other country pursuits. Hexham is also noted for its close proximity to Hadrian's Wall and Northumberland National Park as well as its golf courses, sports clubs and racecourse.

The nearby charming and historic village of Corbridge, offers additional amenities including an enviable array of antique and artisan shops while nearby Matfen Hall and Slaley Hall offer excellent golf, spa and sporting facilities. Newcastle city centre is also within easy reach and provides further comprehensive cultural, educational, recreational and shopping facilities.

For the commuter, the A69 provides excellent access to Newcastle and the A1 to the east, or Carlisle and the M6 to the west. The railway station at Hexham provides regular cross-country services to Newcastle and Carlisle, where connecting main line services are available to major UK cities north and south of the border.
